    Maths Subjects

I'm also facing a similar problem. I want to do applied/stat honours in financial maths and since I will probably be taking UNSW & USyd honours subjects, I was wondering which applied/pure mathematics subjects would provide the best background. So far, my list includes: Applied: -...

Charles doesn't seem to have changed much from his high school ways.

    general UNSW chit-chat

I think Matt is distinterested in this basic stats stuff as his research interest is in nonparametric statistics (basic statistics is parametric stats). With his expertise, he really should be teaching the Honours courses.

USyd Arts > UNSW Arts. I think Engineering should also be included. eg Engineering research centres in photovoltaics, materials science

    Plan your timetable!

Maybe you should do MATH3711 Higher Algebra instead of MATH3611 Higher Analysis. Algebra has lots of links with number theory. I'm planning to do something from FINS3635 Options, MATH3161 Optimization, MATH3101 Computational Maths, MATH3611 Higher Analysis and FINS3775 Research Methods.

    general UNSW chit-chat

You will probably bomb out if you can barely pass 1st yr. Also, on a lighter note now that we've finished the 2006 academic year: http://radar.smh.com.au/archives/2006/02/the_loonies_at.html http://radar.smh.com.au/archives/cover_story_comment/001769.html Hahaha UNSW-relevant...

Now called the Faculty of Business?

The name change was required for a couple of reasons. The AGSM is a very large cluster of "schools" and following the merger we can expect that it will generally enhance research output for the faculty as a whole. So it is an integral part of research in the Faculty. Secondly, I think the...

    Finance Electives

FINS3642 is offered every 2-years. It's also a purely project-based subject (3 major projects with no final exam). So far I have done FINS3636 and FINS3640. I will probably do FINS3635, FINS3775 and ACTL3004 next year. Although Finance@UNSW is strong at corporate finance and investment...

    Plan your timetable!

Note that Analysis has a lot of epsilon-delta type proofs. Also, Higher Differential Geometry has a lot of vector calculus and tensor stuff which I personally don't like. I think MATH2111 and MATH3611 would complement each other quite nicely as Several Variable Calculus only covers a little...

    Mathematics Formula Book

I am looking to buy a (university-level) maths formula book which covers the major theorems and important results in probability/stochastic process as well as the usual kind of engineering/applied math stuff like integral transforms, numerical methods, etc. Someone recommended me: Handbook of...

Actuarial Studies International Recognition-Mac or UNSW

I think the Macq marks policy means that they give fewer Ds and HDs so marks aren't a good way to compare. We need one of their exams.

Why do you think Macq is easier for actuarial? I heard it was harder.

t-i-m-m-y, does this also affect subjects with <10 enrolled? eg Pure Maths usually negotiate classes.
