uts vs sydney for software engineering..

The only reasonable choice for comp sci / software eng in Sydney is UNSW. Hell, it probably has the best school in Australia.

    unsw options for comm/sci

And I think you can only have a single commerce major and no minors for BCom/BSc

    unsw options for comm/sci

Also International Business is widely believed to be the most useless Commerce major available - just look at the subject descriptions. Changing majors is very easy though so you can see for yourself.

    actuaries??-whats that

It's certainly not impossible. A few of my friends did not get many of Part I exemptions, got jobs as generic commerce grads (claims management, business banking etc) and then moved to actuarial positions via internal transfer. They are expected to get the qualification as soon as possible...

    Maths + actuarial at macquarie

It's $450 per exam and they are conducted twice a year - in April and September. You can sit them in Sydney. flying: Yes, I got 4 Part I exams this way and 4 through uni. I am also enrolled non-award in ACST401 at MQ right now.

    Maths + actuarial at macquarie

Core Reading is the comprehensive set of notes for each of nine Part I subjects sold by ActEd. It also includes questions with solutions. Of course it's quite a bit of extra work but there are really no downsides to this approach. I think it's one of the best aspects of the profession.

    Maths + actuarial at macquarie

You don't need to study externally. Simply get the Core Reading and go through it yourself. Realistically you need to spend 2-4 weeks per subject. It can easily be done in parrallel with uni.

    Maths + actuarial at macquarie

You all seem to forget the best way to get actuarial qualification - through IA exams. If you want to do research or quantitative work your best choice is some combination of maths / computer science / economics or finance. The actuarial degree is almost irrelevant, the only thing that...

Can i do Actuarial Study & a Engineering Course?

What I want to say that it's not the best choice for ANY career that you might consider. Give it some time, your perspective may change.

Can i do Actuarial Study & a Engineering Course?

I transfered from seng to (eventually) finance/maths. Anyway.. don't worry about yr degree choice right now, see for yourself. You can always change after a year, just be critical of what faculty members tell you.

Can i do Actuarial Study & a Engineering Course?

I was refering to how hard it will be to transfer to seng, not how hard the material is (see the previous post). What I want to say is that with elec eng you get a reasonable grounding in maths, physics, circuit design AND computing. In seng, however, you mostly learn comp sci stuff, and...

Can i do Actuarial Study & a Engineering Course?

That's interesting. It used to be 150 a couple of years back. As for finance, you're certainly right that it gives you a degree of recognition but not something that counts for much on its own. Ideally you want to be a member of a profession which restricts membership depending on those...

    math1141 or math1131

I suggest you stay with MATH1141 as it makes it much easier to obtain a really good mark ( 90+), thanks to the wacky scaling system. The exams aren't much more difficult either.

Can i do Actuarial Study & a Engineering Course?

SENG demanding ? With something like 91 UAI cut-off I think not ! In fact, now that they've increased the size of yearly intake to over 200 (correct me if I'm wrong) it has lost its main advantage of being a fairly closely knit group. If you want a challenging and broad technical degree...

Can i do Actuarial Study & a Engineering Course?

Alternatively you can start with com / comp sci and later transfer to com / seng That way you can do more commerce subjects in the first year and catch up with seng workshops later. Also I would think twice about actl at unsw unless you are on the co-op scholarship (for example try to...

    Combined degrees

At UNSW the entry score is the same for all Commerce majors and combined degrees that include Commerce (except law). It's around 94

    Combined degrees

I would suggest you look at a combined commerce/science degree. Applied maths or statistics with actuarial studies at UNSW would probably be the best. It's only 4 years. Alternatively, you could take exams through the institute of actuaries and choose other commerce major, such as...

    Combined degrees

Re: Re: Re: Re: Actuarial studies You can change your major or degree as many times as you like. As long as you pass more than half the units of credit each session and have not yet met the minimum requirements for any degree, the uni can't kick you out, so in effect you can do a lot...

    Combined degrees

Re: Re: Actuarial studies Well, you should do com/arts or arts/science then. I don't think you can take a significant number of subjects from all three areas (com, arts and science). Of course you could always abuse the system with some well timed transfers and take as many subjects as...
