Software Eng / Computer Science Double Degree?

The way double degrees work in AUS is by counting the subjects from one major towards all non-core requirements of the other. This is why you can get, say, a BCom/BSc in 4 years instead of 7. The best advice I have ever been given regarding education is to do what is hardest and most...

    FINS Honours

For what it's worth, I was accepted into honours last year - I had a PC in a non-finance subject, 80 for FINS3775 and 79 FINS average overall.

    Employment prospects?

As I said, I'm still thinking about it. It depends on which subject I try first.

I think new syllabus comes into effect in 2005 ? I should really look at the convoluted transitional arrangements in more detail.

    Employment prospects?

Speaking of which, I have about a month to decide which specialist subject to do this year. It would have to be General Insurance, Investment or Finance. Investment and Finance are the easiest but General Insurance is somehting I should have the most direct experience with by the time of the...

    Double Degree with Acst?

Yeah, it's really hard to make a good choice when you just start uni and have a very vague idea about what you want. Hell, I changed degrees/majors 3 times before coming to something I think to be reasonable. Of course, if I were to start again my choices would be different still ;)

It can be done, but some practical experience in relevant areas helps a lot with the exams or so I've heard.

Yeah, or even an associate with one specialist exam and 1-2 years of experience isn't so ba.d

    com & sci

It's not a double degree, as you will only end up with BCom. Finance or accounting are the best choices for the second commerce major, but in truth, you will hardly learn anything new in finance if you do actl. ACTL2001 and ACTL3004 include a condensed overview of virtually everything you...

    Double Degree with Acst?

I'm not saying a double degree is bad, it's almost always better than a single degree. However, economics is not the best choice to combine with actuarial studies because it is unlikely to be deirectly applicable in your work. If you think that you would particularly enjoy economics by all...

It's not so bad once you go to cheaper states, like WA.

    Double Degree with Acst?

I think economics doesn't rank at all in terms of practicality. Actuarial work is at considerably lower level. In my opinion they hardly teach you anything practical in undergraduate economics, with possible exception of basic econometrics.

Don't forget that actuarial degree would allow you to apply to most places that take commerce grads. In the end it's not so bad.

    unsw options for comm/sci

Well, you can always drop computer science as well. Combination with accounting is pretty unusual, but it's still better than straight commerce, I think. You can always claim superior knowledge of Excel VBA as the result ;) Science degree can show the employers that you have some solid...

    Double Degree with Acst?

I agree with flyin'. Most useful majors to combine with actuarial studies would be computer science, stats, finance, accounting or maths. Personally I would recommend something technical, as it is the hardest to learn later on. Computer science is very relevant to grunt actuarial work...

    Employment prospects?

I would say that about 50% of my friends (non co-op) who graduated last year ended up with fulltime actuarial or related jobs by now. Keep in mind that the sample size is pretty small (but over 10). Only a few got their jobs directly through grad programs (multiple offers even) but we are...

    degree decision

For corporate actuaries hours are usually around 40 per week, with some overtime possible around deadlines for major reports. In consulting hours can be much longer on occasion but generally it's around 40-45 as well.
