You could be an independent consulting actuary doing things like statutory valuations of small defined benefit funds, appraising financial position of DIY super schemes etc. Hardly exciting work but you can probably make a decent living. If you want to be a consultant to the big end of town...

    Laptops for Uni

There are many sellers who would at some length to ensure that the item is in order. Look for those with feedback ratings of at least several hundred and who specialise in laptops. The item may also still be under manufacturer's warranty ( for example IBM often offers 3 years)

It means that the seller is supposed to sell the item at the closing price, no matter what it is. If there is a reserve set, the seller has an option not to sell the item if the closing price is below reserve price. I recommend you read about how the system works (on their website) before...

    ACST past papers.

Well, it's not a perfect indication of what MQ exams are like but worth a look anyway: http://www.actuaries.org.uk/Display_Page.cgi?url=/students/specimen_papers.xml These are UK IA papers, 10x series are what Australian Part I courses are based on.

    Laptops for Uni

While for taking notes you still can't beat pen and paper (but who takes notes anyway), having a light (1.5 kg max) laptop to carry around can be very useful. Often computer labs are overcrowded around the time major assignments are due and having your own computer can be helpful. Many unis...

    Computer Science

Oh yeah, and if you want to eventually go into management an MCom maybe a better option than BCom as it makes you sound more senior and 'qualified' (course content is going to be virtually identical though)

    query about combined degrees

You should be able to graduate with 1 degree while there are still several subjects outstanding for the other. But I don't think it's generally done. For example a friend of mine has graduated with BCom even though she still had 1 science subject to go. This is a bit of a murky area for me...

    Commerce or Economics

Hmm.. I stand corrected. Indeed it appears that you can take exactly the same majors within BEc as BCom. Was it always like this ? I was under the impression that the only majors available were something like Economics, Econometrics and Economic History. Admittedly last time i looked was more...

Do law/acst at UNSW ? I believe this combination is now allowed. My view is that it's best to get exposure to as many different things as possible. For example professional accounting qualifications are highly regarded in the industry so why not do law/acct and at the same time get yr...

    com & sci

Stats, maths and comp sci are all good choices. It can be argued that comp sci is the most useful if you want to be an actuary as you often have to deal with extracting data from complex databases, writing programs in VBA, SAS etc. Also remember that getting grad actuarial jobs has become...

    Commerce or Economics

Depends what you are after. Economics is not generally regarded as a very practical course by Australian employers and no, you can not major in Accounting, at least at UNSW. If you want to do economics research, the single best piece of advice is to do a double degree with maths, as otherwise...

    Comp1711 << ???

Yeah, Richard Buckland is easily the best lecturer at CSE, all things considered. I'm pretty sure he is taking 1711 again next year ?

How hard is it to maintain credit average in eng.?

Most people (and even some simians) should be able to get a credit average in first year comp eng, provided that an effort is made to follow lecture material every week. Of course this is easier said. If you do cram in the last 2 days, your chances are still good but it depends on luck, your...

    Science

I think that you can only do one science major within a combined degree such as BEng/Bsci. And no, having a three year science degree with 2 majors is not the same as having separate degrees for each of the majors. That is, you will only be able to put BSc once after your name ; )
