    Financial Economics at UNSW??

I am not so sure about this particular major (seems to be new), but if you want to have any hope of following current financial economics research, you must have a much stronger maths background than you will ever get in the school of business. I suggest doing a combined degree with pure maths.

Yes, yes... but confusing for school students nonetheless! ; p

I'm pretty sure you can do them before you finished Parts I/II.

    actuarial exemptions

It may not pass if it ever goes to general vote. Also signing any statutory documents that go to APRA / ASIC will still require an FIAA, so not sure what the actual implications will be.

chance of getting a actuarial job after graduation

For technical skills, things that rank fairly high, in order of importance, are VBA for Excel (and maybe Word), ability to write SQL queries (at least MS Access level), statistical software (SAS is popular in general insurance), specialised life insurance software like Prophet, Moses and others...

    programming in actuarial studies

I can not agree with this advice. Accounting is extremely useful if you are working in valuation / capital management or in audit. You will probably learn it by osmosis, but surely it is vastly better than the finance major, which is pretty much covered in CT8. While it is debatable how useful...

    few questions on acturial studies

Pretty much what I meant, yes. Getting any particular position is purely luck, but the chances of getting something after 5 or so interviews are good. The ongoing consolidation in the market isn't helping though. Indeed, making people to give up is pretty much the only point of Part I...

    few questions on acturial studies

While I'm not sure what cut-off to suggest, there is some merit to this since there is a lot of similarity between actl and ext 1 / ext 2 hsc maths in the approach one needs to take to do well. Most of it boils down to extensive practice on past papers with hardly any thought given to what is...

    Advantages/Disadvantages of doing B Education.

But is this coming from the federal level, state or individual schools of ed?

    Advantages/Disadvantages of doing B Education.

I wasn't aware of this. It sounds pretty appalling - let's stop those who are most likely to actually understand a subject from even thinking about being a teacher! Do you have any more info?

    Advantages/Disadvantages of doing B Education.

Re: Advantages/Disadvantages of doing B Eduction. I think the best possible advice is that if you want to be a teacher, avoid B Education completely and do a proper undergrad degree (Maths, Physics, Biology etc) and then a DipEd. Believe me, you want to have as little to do as you can with the...

No probs. Actually, I'm probably biased on UNSW vs USyd, although the former does objectively offer more courses.

    Combined degrees?!

Three year undergrad degrees are a joke, as the first two years are usually spent on completely elementary stuff. The main advantage of double degrees in the Australian system is that not only do you get more breadth, but also don't have to waste as much time on worthless electives (of which...

    few questions on acturial studies

QR looks to me just like a cynical attempt by the school of maths to fight low enrollments by repackaging the stats major. You get virtually the same stuff by doing Finance/Maths. If you want to actually understand your models, do pure - you can then easily figure out the applications on your...

    few questions on acturial studies

Actuaries don't really apply high level maths as a rule (if for no other reason that they don't know it) - what they do is limited to pretty basic statistics - also acutarial major is taught in such a way that it's just no possible to really understand what's going on (eg. the stochastic...

It was possible a few years ago. I don't expect it has changed and you can always take the courses non-award.

    few questions on acturial studies

For the actl program, in terms of employment, no one really cares whether you went to mq or UNSW (or ANU etc) as long as your grades are good. As for the teaching quality, having seen courses in both, I wouldn't say there is a great deal of difference, perhaps an edge to mq. In general...

    Finance is crap

Agree with the original poster - FINS major is remarkably useless - you can't do anything technical and don't have anywhere near enough maths (let's be honest, virtually none) to understand any current research. On the other hand, the non-technical bits can be learnt on the job by anyone with a...

Software Eng / Computer Science Double Degree?

See sunny's comment about INFS. Maths was just an example, but in my experience it is the best choice if you want to have a strong computing degree that will allow you to work in more esoteric (and interesting!) areas, e.g. trading systems, computer vision, search. It may not appear this way...
