The workload for a double degree and a single degree is the same, it just takes more years to complete the degree. I think mech eng would have about 25-30 contact hours per week. If you're concerned with workload, you could always do fewer subjects and take longer to complete the degree.

AFAIK you don't need physics. Even if you did need physics for anything, apparently HSC physics doesn't help much.

It's quite challenging if it's your first time programming. It's awesome once you get past all the problems, but can be quite overwhelming in terms of workload for the assignments.
