Tony Abbott - Do you want him as PM?

I don't want him as PM less than I don't want Rudd as PM.

    United Kingdom Election 2010

23% compared to polls of 26% or 27% in poll predictions. I don't think that's "clearly fizzled" but it is disappointing for them. Ah. Although you're incorrect about the ball being in Cameron's court. The incumbent government gets first crack at forming government as per the constitution, which...

    United Kingdom Election 2010

No they didn't. Again, they have the same vote share as Labour from what I can tell. Just because they didn't win more seats means little since as I pointed out this isn't proportional representation - it's not even preferential voting. Also, The Lib Dems are supporting a Tory government.

Basically everybody except Africans has Neanderthal DNA which is interesting.

    United Kingdom Election 2010

Evidence? They're polling the same as Labour. It's just not transferring to a large increase in seats because it's not proportional voting.

What the fuck dude? Jimmy Carter, seriously? It was the Clinton and Bush administrations who were responsible.

I'm part of the SES. The government doesn't fund us. The local councils do through rates. Fucking government. Wait what.

    Let's Agree to Disagree

Not that I disagree with you exactly, but let me put that question back to you: do you believe that we should have no regulation at all? I guess I'm asking: is there a place in your ideology for evidence-based regulation?

    Rudd will lose this election

Yeah look I'm all for non-market based government services like roads, police, healthcare, but you can't with a straight face say the free market should be abolished in other areas. Take banks for example. We COULD have state-owned banks, but what would be the point? They wouldn't operate any...

    Let's Agree to Disagree

No. A lot of civil libertarians are also economic libertarians, or straight-out anarchists or varying flavours. Your stupidity ever amuses me. I'd suggest you start with a basic education on set theory if you want to improve your currently piss-poor record on rational thought. Do I? That's...

NBN worst case cost scenario (without Telstra): $18 billion dollars

Yeah, I was fully expecting this - it's a typical Rudd thing to do, and I believe you're 100% correct. Similarly I think this mining resource tax was set at 40% so that the government could negotiate it down to something like 30% instead of having to negotiate up.

NBN worst case cost scenario (without Telstra): $18 billion dollars

A little-mentioned part of the NBN is that it is being funded on the basis that the rate of return must match the long-term bond rate of 6 or 7%. I.e.: as far as I can tell, the government will get the money back in the long term with interest, somewhat mitigating claims of waste (i.e. money...

NBN worst case cost scenario (without Telstra): $18 billion dollars

Not wanting to pay tax is really a topic for another thread, sorry. Restrict your argument to why this might be a waste of tax revenue.

NBN worst case cost scenario (without Telstra): $18 billion dollars

I forgot to mention the cost is spread over 8 years of deployment, too, so in effect it's more like $2 billion per budget. I don't know that I agree with you Dan. First, it's not an either/or scenario, and secondly there's a huge potential for emergent technology in the internet and its...

NBN worst case cost scenario (without Telstra): $18 billion dollars

So much for the $43 billion dollar figure. A comprehensive study of the infrastructure project concludes that the cost would be between $25 and $35 billion, of which half will be funded by private industry, for a cost of between $13 billion and $18 billion to the government, depending on...
