    Explanation of HSC Marks (Moderating)

A few years of research. I run this site - my original reason for creating it was to increase understanding of the complex procedures used to scale marks and calculate UAIs. I'm not trying to disrepect you or anything, but I'd invite you to prove me wrong. I should point out that the text...

    Raw Vs Aligned

Remember that the raw band cut-offs change dramatically from year to year. That cut-off was only for the 2003 paper. No. The marks are only aligned so that they correspond with the appropriate band descriptors, indicating what a student at that level typically knows and can do. It is the...

    Explanation of HSC Marks (Moderating)

When moderating assessment marks, only the students from your school are considered - the performance of the rest of the state has no effect. The statewide HSC exam is used as a 'benchmark' to place assessment marks from different schools on the same scale. The moderated assessment mark...

    Raw Vs Aligned

No - it depends on how hard the markers think the exam was in comparison to previous years.

    I HATE probability! I have a question, too.. :D

    P(neither 6) = P(not 6 on first die) * P(not 6 on second die) = 5/6 * 5/6 = 25/36

Board of Studies reveals raw marks! (2001)

You're right, there are a number of contractual exceptions in the case of minors, but I don't think this form would be viewed as a contract... what would it be viewed as? I don't know. It's entirely possible that it would have no legal standing at all. If that form doesn't pose any obstacles...

Determining aligned marks between band cut-offs

As a raw mark of 100% always translates to an aligned mark of 100%, this is always the uppermost endpoint. Theoretically, this also means that marks in the top band (and the bottom band) aren't truly comparable from year to year. But they're treated as though they are.

    2003 mathematics solutions

The Board doesn't print solutions, but Jeff Geha wrote some for us last year. They're available in the resources section of the main website: http://www.boredofstudies.org/courses/maths/2u/2003_Mathematics_HSC_Sol_Jeff_Geha.pdf

    Rankings

It depends on their examination marks. Remember that your HSC mark is the average of your moderated assessment mark and your exam mark. If they beat you in assessments, you'll need to beat them by at least that much in the exam.

Not unless the other 39 students in your class crammed and lifted their exam marks too. :)

Board of Studies reveals raw marks! (2001)

There is some debate surrounding this issue. If the Board retains your actual examination responses - or copies of them - you should have a prima facie right to access them under FOI. However, the Board requires students to sign a small slip of paper before taking each exam. Depending on the...

    IT vs. UAI

Oh yes, that would make sense. No - scoring 90s in any combination of courses would all but guarantee you a non-crap UAI. Muck around with SAM to see the contribution that IT might make towards your UAI. The closer you are to the top of a course, the less you are affected by its scaling.

Yup. :) Argh, Will, we need some kind of proof! Record it next time. ;)

do they scale between questions in an exam?

That's obviously the examiners' aim, but it's not always achieved - some modules have absolutely no relation to each other. The statistical adjustment process is only applied where necessary to ensure equity between students. The Masters Report stated that most markers weren't even aware of...

do they scale between questions in an exam?

Actually, there IS inter-question scaling. It only occurs where there are a number of possible modules or electives. If the distribution of marks in one elective is noticeably higher or lower than the distributions of marks in the other electives, and it seems that students may have been...

Board of Studies reveals raw marks! (2001)

Just to clarify Ragerunner's comments: If you're only asking for your raw marks, in the form of total weighted marks (the same as those posted at the start of this thread), then they should be given to you no questions asked. As far as I know, no-one has tried yet. I can't see the Board...
