yeah, my teachers said this too. they were a bit harsh, if we didn't talk about the source we could only get half of the total marks because technically you're not answering the question. but don't worry OP, i'm sure they're not that bad in the HSC. positive marking.

i studied sparta. this was probably my worst section, which is a surprise because in the trial it was my best. i really didn't think they'd ask women, because they asked it two years ago (for 10 marks)... but i knew their role and remembered quotes. i also wrote about perioikoi and helot...
