    MATH1141/ PHYS1131 rollcall

Sorry Stallion...that was a general `you' directed at the new people rather than you. My view of 1131 is that it contains quite a lot of new stuff, but lots of it is pretty easy (especially the class tests) if you've done OK at HSC maths. You basically just need to keep up cos catching up is...

    MATH1141/ PHYS1131 rollcall

...not sure about "almost all MATH1131/1141". Most of the algebra side is new. Maple is new. Some of calculus stuff that is new too but you are right in that a good 4U student could probably pass the course (after scaling) when they start. Try looking at a math1131/1141 exam on the unsw library...

What marking scheme do UNSW use?

There aren't any general rules. The university has some guidelines as to the proportion of each grade that would be expected in a large class (see previous post), but lecturers can ignore that if they have a particularly good/bad/unusual class. Apparently they run some sort of analysis of the...

    actuary

Do 1151/1251. But don't stress over it. Even if you had done 1141 they wouldn't make you go back and do 1151. The problem would be that you wouldn't have covered some of the probability ideas in session 1 that are needed to ACTL1001, so that subject would be pretty hard.

    Comp Sci Maths & Electives

More accurately, you can't count both towards your degree. Some students, like the OP do 1011 in S1, 1131 in S2 and 1231 over summer if their maths isn't too hot, but you end up doing an extra course. Best to go and speak to someone in the school of maths for advice on this...but I'd definitely...

    Higher X or Normal X

Like Shadowdude said... if both are running they don't give many high grades in the ordinary version and they won't give as high a maximum mark. For a good maths student you should get a higher mark in the Higher. If you aren't so good, you're much better doing the easier exam in the Ordinary...

    BMus/BScience

I've heard of some people who have done BSc/BA with a music major in the Arts degree. And some people who have done a BSc at UNSW and then gone to the Con to do music degrees. The BMus/BSc looks like a new combination?. If your main interest is in the science bit, but you'd like to keep up...

Advanced maths Syd U vs UNSW

The ATAR cut-ff doesn't really mean that much - it is just the ATAR of the bottom student that they admit giving an offer to. It doesn't tell you very much about what the majority of the other students are like. Both UNSW and USyd have plenty of very good maths students (eg BoSer TS). At the...

    Share your 2011 ATAR here

The ATAR is a rank...but counting everyone of high school leaving age, not just those that do the HSC. So if you got an ATAR of 90 or more you are meant to be academically in the top 10%. UAC has lots of data about the distributions of ATARs of people who actually did the HSC on their website...

    Math2901 & Actl2002

They might also have different fees (at least for domestic students). Maths is in a special fees category (Band 5) which makes it cheaper. I think ACTL2002 is Band 3.

    2nd Yr Maths

Not sure. They keep changing the system, so all you can do is try...they don't grill you at the door or anything.

    2nd Yr Maths

The stuff on graphs, counting, number theory, etc isn't needed very much (but it would be very useful for 2400 or 3411). What is useful is the abstract stuff on sets, functions, proofs.

    2nd Yr Maths

These higher courses are all a fair bit harder and more abstract than 1st year. You'll find out whether you are cut out for harder maths or not! On the upside they give out lots of HDs and DNs if you are good enough. If you want to try 3rd year higher courses then you should do these are...

    adv maths major

The high performance plan is there for a small number of really exceptional students for whom the normal study plans mean that they would learn less than they are capable of. About the only people who really seem to need this are those that have done a lot of extra maths already and want to take...

HSC students' maths paper 'cruel and difficult' (SMH)

Re: Lol people from bos mentioned in smh article Not actually true...just try publishing a compilation of articles from the smh website and see how long it takes the lawyers to bang on your door. And if you check FB, you'll find that it specifically says that you retain copyright. HOWEVER...

HSC students' maths paper 'cruel and difficult' (SMH)

Re: Lol people from bos mentioned in smh article It is actually way more complicated that that! A post that just says "lol" wouldn't qualify as a "literary work" and so isn't protected by copyright at all. A long review of the mx1 paper definitely would be. (There are also questions...

Moving up from Bsc (maths) to Bsc (advanced mathematics)

In truth there isn't all that much difference. Adv Maths has to do SCIF which some people like and some hate, but the maths is pretty much the same. And advanced maths is designed to finish with honours in maths (in the 5th year) rather than just a 4 year double degree. If you don't keep up a...

    Wam?

Wrong is maybe a bad word. One guy I know transferred from eng to eng/sci to maths. He got credit for lots of stuff like maths 1A he'd already done. His transcript had an several wams on it (for the different programs) but I'm pretty sure he said that the one for science, which he eventually...

    Wam?

See http://www.eng.unsw.edu.au/info-about/our-faculty/faculty-policies/honours-policy. I'm not an engineer, but I thought that if you ended up with a WAM of 55 (or 45) then they didn't award your degree with honours. How they apply the algorithm seems to depend on the school eg...

    Wam?

What's a graduating wam??? The wam that appears on your transcript doesn't weight things differently for different years. In some degrees (eg engineering) they award honours on the basis of a wam, and I think that for some of these they weight the later years higher, but I think that that is...
