Science (Advanced Maths) with Comm or Engineering?

For the benefit of the OP, Math2A is an engineering maths course, designed to be nice and predictable so that people like this can do well without having to work too hard. The higher maths courses that Adv Math students do are significantly more theoretical and challenging. WAMs over 90 are...

Science (Advanced Maths) with Comm or Engineering?

Ho, ho! That must be why they always end up scaling MATH1141/(just about everything) up so much. One of the lecturers showed us some of the raw stats once. Hardly anyone gets more than 90% raw. As for the later year higher exams...I don't remember anyone calling them piss easy.

Science (Advanced Maths) with Comm or Engineering?

As others have said, there isn't a lot of difference between advanced maths and a BSc majoring in maths. With a couple of minor exceptions you do the same courses and they don't really care which program you are in for entry into honours (if you want to do that) - just whether you have done well...

    Grade Pending to Pass?

Whether you get a PC depends on an algorithm. WIth 48 I think you need a session WAM of 53 or a prior WAM of 55...you can look it up. The GP probably means that they haven't applied the algorithm yet. I think that they need to do that manually for people with deferreds. (In maths it could also...

    Philosophy courses in Science/Commerce?

Taking a PHIL course used to be OK as it is in Table A, but the wording has changed from a couple of years ago, and it looks like you now can't. Or it could just be that someone screwed up the wording. Best to ask the Science/Commerce people if you are really interested.

Do you have to pass Finals to pass the course?

Tosh! Maths scales pretty much everything. How they scale depends on how people actually did, university guidelines on proportions of HDs, DNs etc and especially on how good the students are. In a 3rd year higher subject with lots of people with HD WAMs they'll give more than half the class an...

Do you have to pass Finals to pass the course?

Saw the exam...it looked a bit tough for 2hrs. If you got anything like half out you'll be OK. The scaling is a bit complicated as they scale the exam and then add that to the term stuff and then scale the result. At that stage it is hard to even work out what a pass on the final meant. Most...

    HSC Plus scheme! please help

AFAIK they don't split students with the same "after bonus" scores. It doesn't matter how you got that score, only what the final "after bonus atar" is. Every course has a number of students they would like to have. If that was 100, then they will send out offers to about 140 students in the...

    Failing an elective?

If it is really an ELECTIVE then you can either try it again, or else try something else that looks more interesting. The main problem is that you will now be 6UOC (or whatever) short in your degree. If you don't want to spend an extra session coming back to make that up, you might need to...

    S2 Prerequisite Enrollment Question

It is not unknown that the coding of the prerequisites in the unsw enrolment computer has been stuffed. Most schools have someone who can override all that if you ask. ...how many times have I heard that???

    70 WAM. Easy or difficult?

Actually it's worse than that...that distribution gives the percentage of those who pass. In lots of courses (eg maths 1) the failure rate is about 20% (and more if you include everyone who dropped out before the end of the course), so I'd guess that less than 40% of those who start a typical...

    Academic Transcript Question

Your UNSW transcript usually has all the unsw courses on it, plus a list of those your getting exempted from because of previous study (possibly at UNSW but for a different degree). If you failed something at UWS then it won't appear, but if you failed something at unsw and transfer it will...

    ACCT1501 and MATH1131/41 Online Tests.

Doubt it. I think that they add all the bits (exams/computing etc) and then round at the very end. But in the scheme of things 1/10 on a class test usually makes bugger all difference at the end of session.

    MATH 1131/1141 Help

    1) f: R -> R just means that the function takes a real number x in and outputs a real number. (You could compare that to something like f: C -> R defined by f(z) = |z| which takes in a complex number z and outputs a real number (its modulus).) 2) f is continuous at a point a if lim(x -> a)...

    Online Quizzes

Don't know about acc...but for maths, it is pretty hard for them to tell who actually did your test (which is why they aren't worth that much). The reason for the tests is to make sure you learn how to do stuff that will be on the in-class tests. Most people seem to have a go at a test, then go...
