I am kind of in the same position as frozenwaffles, only difference is that my tutor was on holidays during the time when my 4u class started and came back only a few days ago. I am falling behind in class and need to catch up but the good thing is i dont have an assessment till next year so i have the chance to catch up during the summer holidays.

We're using 2 textbooks (Jones and Couchman Book 1 and Book 2) for Extension 1 and 2 textbooks (Arnold & Arnold and Fitzpatrick) for Extension 2. All those books are a bitch to carry around.

I go to Terry Lee for tutoring. He's alright, but watch out for his weird shortcut methods. A lot of teachers won't approve of those methods and deduct marks. Also, if you work on his textbooks, you'll find the questions much harder than what your school would normally give. I mean, we had to do a few exercises from his old Extension 2 book at school, and half the class had no idea what the question was asking and/or how the solution was worked out in the answers section. I haven't seen the 4 unit Cambridge textbook before, but his book might be comparable to that.

Ok help me with these two questions:

1) solve the following equations:

2x^2 + 7x + 1 = 0

2) form the equations whose roots are:

2+i, 2-i

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Could you also show me the working. I already have the answers.

1 Just use quadratic equation and you'll eventually end up with

x = [-7 + root 41] / 4 <--------- I'm sure you don't need working for this

2

Roots are 2+i and 2-i

.: (x-[2+i])(x-[2-i])=0
Expand
x2-2x+xi-2x-xi+(4+1)=0
x2-4x+5=0

Which book do you use? That question looks very familiar
No idea. Got some revision sheets from my tutor and he told me to do it if i wanted to pass the test I got this term.

Anyways, if anyone could help, got some more dilemmas

1) Without calculating a,b and c evaluate -b/a and c/a if one of the equation
ax^2 +bx + c = 0 is:

2 +i

2) find the complex factor of:
x^2 + 4x + 5

3) Express as partial fractions with complex linear denominators:

1/ (x^2 +1)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once again if anyone is bothered, please show working. Thank you

Oh good, i thought someone said terry lee's book was easy; if they're harder than other textbooks, then i feel much better. :)

I agree. My tutor uses the cambridge textbook and the questions are so confusing. Dont know what their asking. At school my teacher is using the Patel blue book. Much simplier.

Is patel the excel study guide?
everyone says terry lee is good so go for for it mitsui. The only hard part is finding out where to buy them from, secondly, getting the money for it.
The range of 4u books is very limited.

Terry Lee's Extension 2 book is $50. (I think that's the price if you apply for tuition...?)
I have yet to see that book in retail stores so yeah.....
