I simply think it is shows a lack of thoughtfulness when people make sweeping generalisations.
OK, I agree I should have put some thought into what I posted, but it was not any generalisation. I simply said that in my opinion, Archman and Laurie are better in maths overall than Hugh Miller, turtle (might be some debate here), Keypad and Ngai. If I offended anyone in any way except saying that someone is better than you, I apologise. Hope this clears it up a bit.

It's difficult to determine who's better at maths - technically maths is a subject of logic. Give all of the guys you named a spontaneous maths exam with content they haven't learnt yet, but which they can do with thought and reasoning - that will determine who the gifted mathematicians really are.

For somebody who to get 96 in 4unit, I would think it'd be very strange for them to get 96 also in 3 unit.

You'd be expecting at least a 98 in 3u if you got 96 in 4u, I think. Justin would likely agree - I believe he knows a lot about the marks at that end of the spectrum.

For comparison, I would be expecting a 96 in 3u if I got, say, 92 or 93 in 4 unit. Captain Pi got 96/93.

I'm not having a go at you. But a) you can't compare results over different years like that and b) at that level of mathematical ability I do think that generic olympiads and tests are not accurate indicators of ability nor do such assessments give a breakdown of what area of mathematics each person specialises in compared to others.

I am not offended. I am a 'nobody', as Keypad would put it, with little chance of coming in even the top 100 for 4unit, let alone the top 20 or worse, 1st.

Good to see someone knowing what criteria I used to get my conclusion. However by the same argument it is impossible to guage based on HSC results as well, so we have basically an undecidable question in who is better.

Don't worry too much about what Keypad says. But do remember that this is maths ext 2, and "shit happens" is something that is seen a lot. As Keypad puts it, sometimes who tops is dependant on "bad luck of 10 others", so believe in yourself and you'll get there. Then you will be somebody.

Seeing the determination of pullup to top maths, I'd say you have some work to do ;)

Hmm...so do you reckon if I'm aiming for a 96 in Ext 2, I should do Ext 1 again?? Or am I theoretically limited to a 94 in Ext 1? (hopefully not)

You could go and get a 100 in ME2 for all we know. But your ME1 result would still only be 96.

However, remember that if you do ME1 again and you get LOWER... that's permanent.

Also, now that you do ME2, does that make 2 units of 2004's ME1 count or not?

the other marks at our school (the school Captain Pi is from) in ext1/2 maths this year were ext2/ext1; 95/92, 94/91; and 93/87 (not too sure though); so a difference of 3 seems prevalent!

I was 92/96, the guy who came top of my school was 93/96 I think, and a few others were like 89/93 or something similar. To get 96+ in 4u would place you in the top 30 of the state, no mean feat by any stretch of the imagination. You can work out what marks would correlate in SAM by punching in a 4u mark and putting in 3u marks until the scaled (not aligned) 3u mark is roughly equivalent to the scaled 4u mark.

Rench: it is entirely possible for your 4u mark to surpass your 3u mark, in fact my 3u mark surpassed my 2003 2u one by 6 marks.

Why do u ask such a stupid question?
I know its just because u want to show off but please why ask a question when u already know the answer.
98%... "yeah that is shithouse, ur gonna fail the HSC!"

illin, I don't think pull_up intended to "show off" - different schools set assessments of different difficulties, so it's a valid question. Whilst it's not an easy question to answer, he has the right to ask it.

And no offence, but one might speculate that you're simply jealous of the fact that he's done well, so in future just keep such thoughts to yourself as these posts don't follow the general theme of the BoS forums.
