Hi all,
Just wondering what I'd be better off doing at uni if I wanted to do graduate medicine.

Well, I'm inclined to say that Medical Science would give you more of an edge... seems logical. Advanced Science, however, will provide you with a little more freedom of choice with regard to electives. Your undergraduate study doesn't really matter too much if you're going onto medicine later on... just a good GPA, GAMSAT and interview score is important.

As Aquawhite mentioned, Advanced Science gives you more choice, which is obviously important in terms of electives, but also means you're free to pick core subjects that you're strong at and hence maximise your GPA/WAM. Just on the topic of electives, from what I've heard, non-science interests are looked favourably upon, and Adv Sc will give you more flexibility to do them, even possibly make a minor out of them (whereas Med Sc would definitely not have the space to do a minor).

Medical Science subjects are pretty much set regardless of which uni you look at. The other thing to keep in mind is, in Med Sc, you're being scaled against the people who want to do med or dent (which is pretty much everyone), so though I can't generalise and say it's easier to score higher marks in Adv Sc, you can take the logic from there. Also, if you're worried about not building as good a foundation with Advanced Science, most med sc subjects can be taken by Science students including those in the Adv stream.

Aim for the top mate.
Go for medicine.
But if that doesn't work.
I'd do Adv Sci at UNSW or USYD.

Do Advanced Science at UNSW so you can take the awesome SCIF1121 course! We do jigsaw puzzles and take personality tests for homework.

yeah and it's a fucking waste of time. You have to do SCIF1111 in med science anyway which is pretty much the same thing

We also take intelligence tests and EQ tests and we discuss the implications of them in scientific contexts... so yeah.

Cool. Sounds pretty useful for psych, especially the experimental/research component.

Just do whatever degree you want. Heck, I'm studying accounting right now and am going to apply for postgrad med, unless I decide to go overseas next year and study it. I'm studying accounting because there is no guarantee in gaining entry into med and those research jobs on offer for med/adv science grads don't have much pay. Also I like accounting. I have an exam 2moro better get back to work.
