I wonder how he got a job over me :/When I was in yr 10, my work experience employer said he looked highly upon people who have worked at McDonalds or KFC because they train staff well or something. Frankly, the KFC in my area is full of staff who struggle to speak English.

Call centre? where about?Yeah, big businesses - McDonalds, Woolworths Group, banks, etc, tend to recruit more online.
If you're looking for a job whilst at school, I'd say that Maccas is alright, as well as some call center jobs - they're not too stressed and pay alright. (Well, what I mean is that maccas pays alright for the amount of "competence" you need. And that call centers pay quite well considering you're seated.)
For uni, probably get a part-time job wherever your degree will be useful.
