HSC
2001
For the first time since the new HSC was introduced in 2001, an HSC student has been able to successfully obtain their own raw examination marks from the NSW Board of Studies. This unprecedented level of disclosure has accelerated the NSW education system along the path to the ideal of a system that is both meaningful and publicly scrutable.

Whilst raw band cut-off marks were not explicitly revealed in the disclosed documents, a handful can be accurately estimated from the raw marks themselves.

The total weighted mark is the final raw mark for a paper after any statistical adjustments have been made to compensate for variation in difficulty between option questions. This only applies to certain courses.

NB: Raw marks are not comparable between years or between courses.

15 September 2004: Updated with initial moderated assessment marks and aligned assessment marks.

How was the student able to do that? It's pretty obvious the board of studies doesn't want people to know their raw marks...

The student made a request under the Freedom of Information Act 1989 (NSW).

The Board initially decided to deny the request and the student subsequently applied to the Administrative Decisions Tribunal for a review of that decision. During the course of those proceedings, the Board was given the opportunity to re-evaluate its position. The Board decided to vary its original decision (thereby avoiding the need for a formal hearing with the Tribunal) and allowed the student to access the requested documents.

How do we know the authenticity of these results?

Mmhm, it was you, say yes :D Few people other than law students italicise the Act's name but and leave the Parliament that passed it unitalicised :p

So every single person is going to have to ask the BOS through a FOI request or are they just going to give up and allow us to fill in a form for it?

I expect that, if enough interest is shown, a system will be instituted similar to that used for the clerical recheck of examination marks, requiring students to pay a nominal fee to obtain a statement of their raw marks.

The Board hasn't expressed any opinion on the issue, though - currently, FOI requests are the only way.

Well, I applied in July last year... but now that it's been done once, it should only take a few weeks... :)
