Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on something that I always wished existed when I was in Year 12, a simple calculator that converts raw marks → scaled marks → estimated ATAR.

Most ATAR calculators only work from band or scaled marks, which isn’t what students actually get after exams. I built this tool to help you understand how your raw marks might translate after scaling, based on historical BOS data, subject scaling patterns, and typical moderation ranges.

It’s free, no signup, and super quick to use.
If you want to try it and give feedback on accuracy or features to add, check out the link above.

I’m releasing this because:

  • A lot of students post “what ATAR will I get with xx raw marks?”
  • Raw → ATAR conversion usually gets confusing without scaling understanding
  • No existing calculators simplify the process this way
  • I want to make HSC planning a bit less stressful, especially during trials and externals
Would love any suggestions from you all, especially if you’ve done the HSC recently or are familiar with scaling.

Hope it helps someone.

Looking good! I would perhaps change up maths ext 1 and 2 to count 2 units each.

Looking at that screenshot beaver194 posted, it seems to be quite inaccurate as of now.

1: It seems to be quite inaccurate. 95 raw in 2U tends to produce a scaled mark somewhat similar to an 85 raw in 3U. Also, 3U/4U Scaled Marks tend to be similar-ish to the aligned HSC marks, however, here, they're similar (or even significantly lower for 3U for some reason) to the raw marks.

2: Scaling doesn't go over 100 for HSC Subjects. This isn't VCE 😭

3: As beaver194 said, 3U and 4U should count for 2 units and it should sack your 2U mark.

4: Subjects indeed tend to scale pretty similarly from year to year if you're to consider HSC -> Scaled, however, the raw -> HSC (i.e. the alignment) is HIGHLY dependent on the difficulty of the exam that year. Thus (ik scaling is raw-> scaled but it shouldn't matter here), the scaling is kinda rly hard to do in general from raws. This is kinda just a comment on this thing as a whole but I feel like it's easier to predict HSC mark than raw mark. As a suggestion, you could somehow find a way to use school's past data and idk some AI shi (🤣) to predict their HSC/scaled marks better 🤣

Hahaha thanks, I've fixed up the first 3 bits. For the 4th one yeah its for sure tricky, working on using school data to help w better analytics. This is honeslty js a good guide for ppl receiving their results and are curious if theyre on track without worrying ab alignment n stuff.

Scaling can be approximated by polynomial functions, such as y=1-(1-x^2)^2
