People who tell you to do biomed have a vested interest and/or are unaware that the IT industry is picking up (and necessarily has to considering the direction of the human race).

Do what you want. Take BE/BSc with comp engineering and maths. It's a great course. You MAY end up changing to comp eng/phys or electrical eng/comp sci or such, but that can't be helped.

There's no RIGHT degree for anybody. Though a few degrees come close. And trust me when I say you want to be doing one of those degrees, not something you technically have the ability to do, but have no interest in.

Thanks for that Slidey, I've actually changed my preference to comp eng/commerce(finance), and yes i don't know if i'll keep commerce or not after i actually experience it.

But now i have another confusion about the differences between electrical eng and comp eng. I've been thinking of comp eng for a while and I was impressed at the C&C day by the CSE faculty. I know comp eng has a lot of elec subjects in it but elec eng seems more varied in depth? The courses I can recognise(think I will enjoy) atm are things like Microelectronics(L4)... from the EET booklet, are all the electives of elec eng available to comp eng, or which ones are? i cant find out the exact answer to this hehe.

Elec Eng covers power distribution and comp eng involves more programming. There are subjects which are similar in concept but done in different way. E.g. you use different processors, hence different assembly language for lvl 2 microprocessor subjects.

Because the lack of power distribution topics in comp eng, the Energy System type of electives are not availabel to comp eng.

Cheers

okay thanks, thats good becuase im not interested in the 'Energy System' type electives. Also why did you choose your combination of elec eng/comp science, any specifics?

This combo allows me to do 1 year of electrical electives (where I will do electronics designs, hardware stuff and signal processing) and another year of computer science (programming + graphics) instead of just doing one particular type of subjects. It is good value.

sounds good, I'd like to do something similar. I'll just have to decide if to go with elec or comp eng and comp science, physics or commerce after I experience it, lol

hmm, actually screw commerce, I dont like the sound of it at all and its 5.5 yrs (with Eng). The only reason I would do it is if I cant get a job in comp eng or elec eng then i have commerce to fall back on...btw thanks for giving me the insight Gman, I have pretty much decided to do Elec Eng/Comp Science atm, hehe

So say if I wanted to do the same as you have mentioned, would that be possible by doing a comp eng(electronics designs, programming, graphics, computer architecture) and combined with a commerce degree instead of doing elec eng/comp science ?

A mathematics major, much like an engineering major, provides problem solving skills applicable across a broad range of fields and will in general help your employment chances. That and pure maths is just fucking cool. :)

Also, yes there are a lot of science/engo's.

hmm here we go again, another change of thinking! Comp Eng/Science (Physics). Also do you guys know much about the '4.5 years BE(Comp Eng)) MIT (& by Research)' degree? I know its only possible to do it in 3rd year. So is it like a Masters Degree in Comp Eng?..

You better off doing Comp Eng with Physics. Master is really meaning afterful you soak yourself in the industry for a while..

And re your comp eng + commerce q... you can still do what you mentioned, but you will do less comp related subjects.. either way it is not a bad choice to do commerce and eng.... the demand of this is higher than demand of eng/sci anyway

hmm, okay i agree thanks for that. Im going to go for comp eng/commerce, then see how I enjoy the commerce subjects then decide from there.

Is it possible to choose any of the electives from Comp Eng in a Computer Science degree?

hey guys, I was looking at some pdf from UNSW computing about the assumed knowledge for Maths, what score do the numbers in the following table exactly represent? It seems like twice the HSC mark or something..

For Ext 1, it is the combined marks in Maths + Ext 1. For Ext 2, it is the combined marks in Ext 1 + Ext 2.

My two cents, if you are confident with Ext 2 maths, just do MATH1141, otherwise pick MATH1131.

You can search for posts about 1141 vs 1131 on this forum about the difference. Basically 1141 teaches faster and covers about a week of extra material (which are also examinable) compare with 1131.
