A new leader couldnt do a great deal different, other than strengthen alliances. The reality is that troops will probably still be there in 2008 despite anything this admin does.

I always thought the concept of 'God' was just a ridiculous attempt for humans to justify their own existence. Apparently they can use it to justify their actions as well. It's the inverse of 'The Devil made me do it'; it's just an abstract incarnation of the base elements of humanity used to avoid blame. Does the validity of his entire pro-war argument rest on some crackpot 'God told me to' claim? Whether you call your imaginary friend God or Mr. Wigglesworth, it doesn't make his advice any more valid, or you any less crazy.

The reason for fighting
I never got straight
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side.

No, I'm just saying Bush shouldn't leave the matter of ending the war to somebody else. The UN said no, a lot of the public said no and yet he still did it (but then, who ever cared about the UN and the public?). Even if he comes to the end of his term he should have some idea of what to do about withdrawing fully instead of palming it off to his successor.
Around the time of the invasion the majority of the public said yes iirc.

And I'm glad. Hopefully next time we can get a real republican instead of a communist.

Anti-Bush sentiment is still cool, it seems.

It's ridiculous how many people on the site [and elsewhere] are carrying a personal vendetta against the President himself, rather than the policies and political actions of the President.

e.g. "Bush-isms", the pretzel incident, this etc.

seriously, i hope that this alleged statement is merely a rumour, or just hugely taken out of context...

No chance, it's being repeated in news media services around the world:

"Press Releases
God told me to invade Iraq, Bush tells Palestinian ministers
"
http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2005/10_october/06/bush.shtml

Reminds me of the quote:
"Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction"

Good grief. The only thing that statement's going to do is get nonChristians very annoyed with him, as well as probably help to somewhat solidify his Christian Right allies. But jeez... "mission from God"...

"God would tell me, 'George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan'. And I did, and then God would tell me, 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq . . .' And I did.
"And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me, 'Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East'.
"And by God I'm gonna do it."

this makes baby Jesus cry.

People hate him that much. People feel that they can sense his personality through the way he speaks.

Much the same can be said of John Howard. He has been speaking on the public record people tend to feel that they understand him personally and as such are entitled to hate him personally. However, I highly doubt everyone in Australia knows John Howard to the extent of being personal with him.

it harks back to this:
"I'm also mindful that man should never try to put words in God's mouth. I mean, we should never ascribe natural disasters or anything else to God. We are in no way, shape, or form should a human being, play God." - George W. Bush, ABC's 20/20, Washington D.C., Jan. 14, 2005
"God loves you, and I love you. And you can count on both of us as a powerful message that people who wonder about their future can hear." - George W. Bush, Los Angeles, Calif., March 3, 2004

Just my 2 cents ...

I think these quotes attributed to Bush are false, and his words twisted and taken out of context so that this precise reaction we are seeing in this tread is obtainable.

He might possibly have said this in his mind or while in bed contemplating what he is going to do, but i don't believe he would've said this in public, much less at a meeting with foreign ministers.

I just hope Bush can succeed in Iraq so as to quieten all those Bush haters.

Mr Bush, once quoted as saying: "I believe that God wants me to be president" ;)

lol I suppose God never told Bush to sign the Kyoto Protocol, to stop selling small arms to third world countries, give money to starving countries and save people from Hurricane Katrina?
