I was just thinking the exact same thing Iron Woman. I predict Costello will challenge Howard towards the end of this term and win.

As long as Howard lies to the working class and sucks up to the rich he'll get his fifth term...it's worked for the previous four hasn't it?
Oh yes? and how will Beazley get elected? On issues?!

i was thinking the other day how much i really do dislike john howard, to the point where i think i'd have a party if he died.

he's ruined australia, it's going to take years to fix it.

we must as well all kill ourselves on july 1

Howards getting pretty old isn't he? maybe he'll get sick and die. Or something.
But then if labor was in power what would all us "bitter lefties" do with our time :p

Why complain that Labor's not left enough and that the Socialist Alliance should be in power of course;)

Why is it that such pointless comments always seem to sprout forth from the board's 'righties'?

The following few months should be interesting, as it seems as though there will be a showdown of sorts between the conservative Liberals and the liberal Liberals sooner or later. So much for unity within the Coalition (perhaps).

My only true hope for the next half-Senate election is that the Coalition's majority is lost and that the Family First party doesn't hold the balance of power (the Family First 'threat' does tend to be overstated, I know). It would be good to see the Democrats return another Senator or two to the chamber, too.
I'm not exactly a righty, but I will say my comment is no less pointless than the imaginative accusations and claims some (note the lack of generalistion?) left-wing people are making about Johnie. I'm not jumping to conclusions, either - they are lefties (which I'm sure they'll attest to). :)

I'll agree on keeping Family First out of power, though.

I think it would actually be rather hard to group me, Justin.

Was just going by your political compass:p

I agree that the prospect of Family First holding the balance of power is an extremely bad idea, as is the Libs having a majority in the Senate.

Whats the difference between family first and the liberal party? Hardly anything...except family first is backed by the assemblies of god.
Some of their policies are far too conservative for anyone's taste.

Paul von Hindenburg was ELECTED in his seventies. Howard has no reason to stop now.

I particularly disliked the argument 'Howard is too old' by Labor last election. I can't see anything wrong in a leader being old.

With luck, Costello will finally crack the nut and and launch a leadership challenge, hopefully fracturing the party beyond repair.

On that note, is the Liberal Party really as united as it appears? The Cabinet's women are certainly at odds with Abbot's IVF proposal, but are there any serious anti-Howard factions within the party that would be very displeased with Howard's determination to continue?

The liberals won't force christian morals onto people.

Leetom: as far as I can see, most people feel that Howard is their only natural leader, however costello deserve a chance to run ONCE HOWARD STEPS DOWN.
No one in the liberal party will challenge John Howard for leadership, or if they do it will be very foolish.

Yes, do you see the liberals pushing to outlaw abortion? (possibly abbot would want to).
Family First would have abortions outlawed, religion forced into public schools etc etc.

Howard supports the current status quo, and it is he who is stopping it from becomming an issue. Whether that's smart politics or his beliefs is up to u.

there's no need for imagination here
he does lie frequently
and his policies are socially regressive
what's not to understand?

This is the winter of my discontent.

The more I look at it, the more Peter Costello just keeps looking more and more like Shakespeare's Richard III. From the long and prosperous, yet shady, rule of Henry IV, to the bitter behind-closed-doors nature of the liberal party conflicts.

As such, for my Drama Individual, I'm playing Costello...as Richard III...much help needed for issues/ideas/presentation.

gosh poor costello. i reckon he'd be better than howard. as for being too old, nah, howard's fine...but still...give costello a chance! kinda like the queen, i don't want charles as king but i'm beginning to feel very sorry for him.

as for family first, i support their values but not for politics. i don't think christianity and politics really mesh well..but if people are voting for them because they represent what they want, then that's perfectly fine.
