Ok just wondering if any of you stay on campus at ANU,
What are the facilities like?
Is it better to stay in self- catered or fully catered accommodation?
Which of ANUs residential halls/ colleges have the best social atmosphere?
How difficult is it to balance part time work and the work load of a degree like Commerce/Law?

hmm ill try and help....

i live on campus @ bruce hall and the social side of the collge is awesome, friends at hand 24/7, however the social aspect isnt really conjusive to serious study, im having major issues with that!

in my opinion u are probably better off in regard to finances to go for the catered option and i mean fully catered! im on a partly catered plan and let me tell u cooking on the weekends blows!

i would say that bruce hall has the best atmosphere, we are waayyyy friendlier then the other colleges and our rooms are apparently the biggest ( i dont know how because they are very similar to a shoebox). There is only one college u should NOT live in by any circumstances and that is Johns, im not going to explain why, all i have 2 say is that place sux and the ppl there are moronic pricks!

johns has a reputation, but they aren't all that bad.. i should know, i live there. johns and bruce just have a thing against each other. i don't by any means condone any actions of johns people.

Johns is heaps mad... and I live in Bruce Hall... The university way of life is supposed to be all accepting and free and liberal from stereotyping people...

the whole big fight between johns and bruce is what is moronic not the actual people...
i know tons of people at johns.. they are great... and so are a few of bruce hall peopole.

Seems like there is a college rivalry at every uni. At Newcastle it is International House vs Edwards Hall. I endorse bruce hall, my sister lived there for 3 years and liked it. I stayed there last year and i thought it was pretty damn nice and it has awesome showers as well :D

Im at burgmann its pretty good because its small compared to B&G and Bruce, and it has 21 hot meals a week which is mad. Rooms are a decent size, friendly people. I would say the best thing to do is come down on open day and have a look around.

As I am a tightwad I am thinking about going to one of the cheapest halls in self-catered accommodation. Which one is better Fenner Hall or B&G and what have people heard about both halls? Especially you people who live in Canberra...

go B&G of those two, they dont cech references at B&G though so there are a fair few weirdos there and its so big 500+ ppl so its not a close knit group like so other colleges which is either good or bad. Fenner would be ok but your better off renting because its so far away, you can get a room in a share house for around 100 a week.

b&g is on campus so that's easier. however i had heard their rooms are pretty small, but hey it's not like rooms at the other colleges are massive.

I saw the accomodation yesterday and it seems pretty well set up....The rooms are a bit small, but at least you aren't sharing; the bathrooms are however unisex unless you go to Ursula; the selk catering colleges are well organised and everything seems to be clean and lots of space in commonrooms...maybe thats because they were all told to clear out thou...

woops i need 2 clear up my generalisation about ppl at johns...

when i posted i had just had a night of resless sleep due 2 certain members of said hall driving past at 3am in the morning tooting their horns from their shitbox cars:mad: . The majority of ppl at johns are good ppl and i was just venting my anger at the stupidity of certain members of the college! also bruce just had its ass kicked in rugby by johns so i was a little bitter! heres my opinions of the colleges 1 by 1.

bruce= fucking awesome
b&g= great if u dont mind cooking
ursies= kinda weird (my impression of ppl from there)
johns= lame... sorry i just dont like the obsession with sports over there and the mentality of some ressies
fenner= cool, some really great people, however location sux ass

Time for a response to this from Ursies ...
I'm at Ursies, and we're the smallest college (technically a hall these days), apparently we have a rep for studying all the time ... all i can say is, I WISH ... maybe if that were true my results would have been a little better. Being a smaller college, theres not as many of us, so we aren't seen out in a big mob quite as often, but we're all pretty close and like someone else said earlier ... you've always got friends at hand 24/7 ... I'm pretty sure it would be like that in any of the smaller residences. Again, residences are good for socialising, but not so great for the study environment ... and yes, noone can avoid the fact that Johns has a repuation. Although, I have to admit, we don't quite fight with them quite as much as the B&G/Bruce crowds seem to. It all depends what u want really ...

i've stayed at johns, ursies and fenner and in order i preferred fenner, johns and then ursies.... fenner isnt that big of an inconvenience regarding distance when theres a free shuttle bus available. i knew a guy who went to UC and he stayed at Fenner! now THAT is a poor fella

What are the major differences between all of them? Are there some characteristics which are identifiable with a certain college?

E.g. Is one which is more multicultural, accepting more international students etc.?
Is there one with a greater emphaises on sport?
Is there one where all the geeks go to work 24/7? :p

Im pretty sure it would be possible, however dont just turn up with little to no money and expect to get by, you will need a slush fund because there will undoubtly be things that you need to buy, moving out of home is more expensive than it seems at first.

There seems to be a few stereotypes floating around about each of the halls. Being at bruce i can say that i am bias because i think that it is the best place to live at ANU. In regard to Bruce we have quite alot of international students but the majority are from oz. In regard to emphasis on sport i can say this without the slightest hint doubt that John's has an overwhelmingly large focus on sporting success. All colleges, in my opinion, have different types of people that come to live there. ie. you can really like to study or you can really like to party or you can fall somewhere in between and you will still find someone that you have stuff in common with. On the whole though, colleges can be pretty rowdy at times and sometimes you just want the noise to go away!

Just to finish off...
I totally encourage evryone to live @ college because it allows you to fully engage in uni life and u make the greatest friends in a very short space of time! That being said, some people do not enjoy the overly social aspects of the hall and even if you are one of those people you can still find your 'place' in the hall!
