Hi all,

This forum is a resource directory for anyone needing help with the new Mathematics course, HSC Mathematics General 1.

Starting in either the 2010 or 2011 Preliminary HSC year, all students of General Mathematics for the HSC will study:

  • a common course, Preliminary Mathematics General
  • an HSC course selected from either Mathematics General 1 (a new, easier course) or Mathematics General 2 (this particular course is based on the current General Mathematics course content, with some amendments).
Here is the new HSC syllabus for BOTH General Maths courses, refer to the Board of Studies NSW website Home - Board of Studies NSW
for more information.

Mathematics syllabuses:

Please post any handy resources relevant to the course content of HSC Mathematics General 1, for example; as this is a PRACTICAL course, please post:
- credit card statements (NAMES REMOVED)
- loan repayment documents (NAMES REMOVED)
- Information regarding "Blood" (from Biology notes/PDHPE notes) and "Correlation of body measurements" for the HSC course focus study, "Mathematics and the Human Body".

Thank you for all your help. I myself plan to study either Mathematics General 2, or Mathematics Advanced.
Thank you once again.

;) - James

Mate the new syllabi for all the Maths course are pretty shit. Also a few days ago I heard you shitting on General Maths and and saying how Mathematically gifted minds like yourself should do 3U Maths. What happened mate? Now you WANT to do General instead? Make up your mind.

There's no need for Maths General 1. Seriously, you'd rather just not do Maths. I see the point in General Maths now, as it teaches some practical skills etc without discussing Calculus, so it's a light way for getting Kids to learn some maths they may use in their life. But General 1 is pointless. It's like how they've dumbed down 4U Maths and made 2U harder.

The decision taken at the last Board of Studies meeting on March 31 regarding the implementation of new Stage 6 Maths curriculum is as follows.

The Board of Studies agreed:

(i) to endorse the Stage 6 Mathematics syllabuses.

(ii) to advise the Minister not to approve the Stage 6 Mathematics syllabuses for implementation at this time pending the outcomes of the national curriculum development.

(iii) that the Board use the Stage 6 Mathematics syllabuses as the basis of its advice to the National Curriculum Board concerning the national syllabuses.

(iv) that the issue be revisited at its December 2009 meeting to consider progress of the national Stage 6 Mathematics syllabus.

The Office of the Board wanted to hold off implementation indefinitely, pending National Curriculum development, however the teacher reps on the Board opposed this because: The current syllabuses were not reviewed in 1996 as others were and are therefore dated; the new syllabuses are ready and teachers want them – especially new courses; it is unknown when the National Curriculum will be implemented, especially in stage 6.

The result of the debate was that the Board decided to review the decision to implement in December.

The current General Maths syllabus is way too easy. I'm outraged at how they are making it even easier. If you are contemplating on General Maths, then do General maths 2.

That would be the case for 2 unit, 3 unit and 4 unit. The General Course is new. It's also quite well written, and I see no reason to change it. The other 3 courses could do with an update (although I don't necessarily agree with the new drafts). The General Course, as it is, could be much harder for students. It all depends on how it is taught.

In any case, it ain't gonna happen. Not next year anyway. So you'll only have one General course to choose from.

I don't necessarily agree with these teacher reps.

Are the current courses dated? Many would say not.

Do teachers really want the new courses? Again, many would say not.

firstly, how can they make general maths any easier?

secondly, having an easier version of general maths is still pointless. they should go back to the old system and introduce a "life skills" math course instead which teaches you how to do your taxes, manage your finances, calculate appreciation/depreciation and do other math stuff you will need to know IRL. cause general maths is certainly not applicable to RL, and i dont see how making the course easier is going to help anybody.

I don't think I said that I was personally considering General Maths ... oh wait, I did say that! ;) Anyway, don't worry, I'm more likely to study Mathematics Extension (I haven't updated my signature yet) ... however; I would really like to do the International Baccalaureate instead of th HSC ... so I might be doing the Further Maths course, which is actually much harder than Mathematics Extension course ... :)

Drongoski he's merely a fickle Year 10. He changes his subject choices like I change my underpants, daily.
