actually, there is no such thing as the consent of the law... the law can never 'consent' to anything [consent being defined as "the giving of permission to do something"]; but the law does 'condone' certain behaviour by labelling what is and what isn't illegal.

now, xiaoey is actually right, so i'm going to give him a rep pt.
Liquor Act 1982 (NSW)
Section 115 - Consumption etc of liquor by minor

(1) A person under the age of 18 years shall not:

(a) consume liquor on licensed premises or on the premises of an unlicensed restaurant,
(b) obtain, or attempt to obtain, liquor for consumption on licensed premises, or
(c) carry liquor away, or attempt to carry liquor away, from licensed premises.

Maximum penalty: 10 penalty units.

(1A) It is a defence to a prosecution for an offence under subsection (1) of consuming liquor on the premises of an unlicensed restaurant if it is proved that the defendant consumed the liquor in the company of and with the authority of his or her parent or guardian.

1. What does the 10 penalty units mean?

2. The legislation doesn't seem to state it's illegal for a minor to DRINK alcohol in their own house, just to purchase, or consume on licensed premises, or did i miss something?

lol yeh i see where you were coming from :p yes it acts as a general deterrance but unless its an equal detriment on any normal person, it is not really equal. well in my opinion that is.

ok the law can't do anything to minors drinking in their own home, but it can smack the shit out of the people who supply the alcohol to the minors (ie. your parents), or it can get you if you got it through a false ID.
Section 114 - Sale or supply of liquor to a minor

(1) A person shall not, in any place whether or not licensed premises, sell or supply liquor to a person under the age of 18 years.

Maximum penalty: 50 penalty units or, if circumstances of aggravation exist in relation to the offence, 100 penalty units or 12 months imprisonment (or both).
Jago: a penalty unit is an amount of financial punishment. One penalty unit at the moment is defined as $110 (s17, Crimes (Sentencing Procedure Act (1999)). That way the government can raise all fines collectively to account for inflation

I don't think the government (RBA) has used monetary policies such as the one you specified to counteract inflation since the early 1990s which was due to stagflation. Correct me if i'm wrong in any way...

dude i'm not talking about economics here (for once)...

i'm talking about financial penalties...

financial penalties are supposed to have a deterrent effect, right? (don't do this again jago or otherwise i'm going to fine you $2200)

... now suppose over the long term, inflation is obviously going up (so the price level has gone up, so money wage has gone up)... so the deterrent effect of fixed financial penalties declines...

now, since we have something called a penalty unit, then all the government has to do to increase the deterrent effect of financial penalties across the board (to counter this decline in deterrent effect as money wage increases) is to increase the value of the penalty unit, which is only like amending one clause of a piece of legislation.

also, btw, notice the penalty unit is $110 - anyone recognise the GST? :D

It's one of those stupid laws that no one really cares about, and one that the police often overlooks.
