although it is ultimately the womans decision whether or not to keep the child, i cannot fathom how many of you are so adamant about how little responsibility rests on the father. i well know that the man contributes sperm to the formation of a child but seriously i dont think that he has no say in the matter.

in the case of rape or sexual abuse this is not relevant.

but if i got pregnant with a man i would certainly want his guidance in the matter. after all, you cant make a baby all by yourself.

and tulipa, i understand how it feels to believe yourself to be pregnant. for some reason whilst on the pill i never ovulated, leading me to extremely scary thought processes and several visits to the doctor and specialist. also, before i went on the pill, but after i had become sexually active, i had several instances of lateness and spotting where i also thought i might be pregnant. these experiences are terrifying, but i dont think you should be too quick to judge mens ability to empathise.

Yeah when we refer to pregnancy being this huge thing we're not talking about the physical aspect of it--yes its a bitch but thats not what we're on about.

Any girl who is sexually active has probably had a pregnancy scare. They are NOT nice things. So many things race through your mind, and it starts being the only thing you can think of 24 hours a day.

Yes, a man contributes to a pregnancy. But in my opinion he gets off a damn sight better than the woman. If I was to find that I really was pregnant I would feel obligated to discuss with my boyfriend our options.

However, ultimately the decision to abort is left up to the woman. A man cannot force an abortion upon a woman (march her in there and hold her down while they do it--I don't think so) in the same way he cannot force her to have the child (if she wants to abort she is gonna do it with or without him). THAT is why abortion should always remain a CHOICE, and not a CRIME.

You can say its murder all you want, thats fantastic, in the end for you its still a CHOICE according to your morals--you choose not to abort. But the fact remains that not everyone thinks like you and there really is a lot more to the story. Someone else's decision to abort their own unborn embryo does not affect you, and there for it should always remain a legal choice for women out there.

I am personally pro-choice. Doesnt mean if i become pregnant im out the door having an abortion. It is just reassuring for me to have that option.

Im not sure where life starts. Afterall this baby starts out as a couple of cells...isnt that what a piece of grass is? When does that turn into a life?

However i dont like this whole down with men attitude. I hate it that men can say 'dont have abortions, its bad' like all those jumped-up male politicians in the media but for women to say that men have no idea what it's like to love a child is just a little out of whack. They can never appreciate what it's like to have one of course, but they must get some idea of what having a child means. honestly i dont think they are as dumb as they seem at times (and guys that wasnt meant to be mean so dont jump down my neck).

However if you, as a male, think you have the right to make the decision then im guessing you care for whoever you have been with and they would probably want you involved.

But although i greatly respect the fact men would like the involvement in the decision i think that at the end of the day it really is up to us girls. It just depends on how much you matter to her before she takes your opinion on board.

The quicker they make abortion legal, the better. That way, if Girl A believes abortion is bad, she doesn't have to have one. If Girl B needs an abortion she can have one. Then we're all happy chaps! woot!

Don't have sex if you aren't willing to accept the costs (ie pregnancy)?
i dont remember who said it, but you're a fucking legend! I've been trying to say this all along.

So can I. I can imagine having a big cushion shoved down my shirt for 9 months, being sick every morning etc. Just because you have a vagina doesn't mean you can't "imagine" it better than someone who doesn't when neither of you have been through it.
i gotta agree with this. im a chick, and i can imagine being pregnant just the same as a male can. I think the argument, girls, you need to be focusing on is the fact that guys dont know how to imagine having monthly periods. girls and guys can probably equally imagine being pregnant (if a chick has never been pregnant), but guys cant imagine getting periods. thats a different matter.

on the other hand i dont think the male who impregnated the female should have the final say on whether she gets an abortion. he is entitled to his opinion, of course, everyone is. but the bottom line is that its her body and if she isnt mature enough to have a baby, then she should be able to abort it.

bottom line here people: if u aren't mature enough to face consequences then KEEP YOUR PANTIES ON!

Hellelujah, someone understands!

I have gotten to an age where I probably wouldn't abort if I found out I was pregnant. But I 100% believe that I should have the CHOICE.

I think this is a silly statement. The difference between a piece of grass and a human embryo is that the latter will become a living, breathing person if it is allowed to grow to full term. The grass is technically a living organism but it has no conscious capacity of its own nor will it ever have. Thats why killing grass isn't considered a shame whereas killing a foetus is depriving it of the chance to become a person.

Time and time again preaching abstinence just does not work. Expecting people to suppress a natural urge is unrealistic. Rigorously teaching safe sex would be far more beneficial.

Yes, I know that. My point was that an embryo, although not yet conscious, will develop into a person. Killing an embryo isn't doing it any intrinsic harm but it could be argued that it is being harmed extrinsically, it's being deprived of living a potential life.

I know what you mean, but letting an unwilling young girl for example bring a child into the world that she cannot look after fittingly, is kinda of depriving that chid of a life too
That's a debatable comparison to make. When you see a homeless child on the street do you think to yourself 'that kid would have been better off if it had never been born'?

There will always be someone out there who is willing to look after an unwanted child (foster care, etc). Although a girl can say 'I can't look after the child' it doesn't mean that child should just be aborted to save everyone the trouble. I understand every situation is different and it's difficult to generalise here, but the idea of aborting a child when it doesn't have to be has always bothered me personally. I believe in the individual woman's right to a choice but I don't have to always agree with that choice. If that makes sense.

I think everyone here is imposing their own personal ethics and morals on the situation, when, in reality it is an intensely personal experience, and all the debating in the world isn't going to solve the issue.

Actually, I've read studies that have shown men have a stronger instant bond with their child than mothers do.
If the parents never saw the baby, and it was put in a nursery full of other babies, the fathers picked the 'right' baby correctly a significant number of times higher than the mothers.

Well no that statement is not silly.it is correct. I was merely exploring where life did or did not start and the fact an embryo did start off as a couple of cells. I did not say it would never develop into anything more. and thankyou for preaching me on what grass is and is not. I really did need the clarification. I have not attacked your opinion except to defend my own so dont attack me or my opinion. That is what is simply silly here.

And i would like to ask all those people who are 100% anti-abortion how they feel about stem cell research involving embryos?just out of interest......

You think I was "attacking" you because I said I thought your statement was silly (and proceeded to explain why)? Ok, feel free to be offended if it floats your boat.

well yes thats true. and we're being taught safe sex yet people still arent listening. if people aren't going to take precautions, then like i said, they're not mature enough to have sex.

i know a couple who constantly have "pregnancy scares"...practically every time they have sex the condom breaks. (now im sure the guy needs to buy new condoms, but anyway) i keep telling the girl to go on the Pill JUST IN CASE, but she wont, coz "its not good having chemicals controlling ur body"...so instead she's going to have massive depressive months where she thinks she's pregnant.

in THOSE cases, she nor her boyfriend are mature enough to have sex.

ok so i know people cant suppress the urge, so instead, why dont we make sure tyhe condom doesnt break, and go on the pill. i dont get why so many chicks are so against going on the pill.

thats the sort of maturity im talking about

The eternal problem is that immature people will do immature things. That's why they're immature :p

Immature people will have sex. They will get pregnant. It doesn't matter how much you preach, unless you castrate everyone nothing will change.

So I don't know what my point is. Stupid people suck. There we go.

This is interesting... very unexpected. Maybe this is by chance though? I wonder why it is if it isn't (by chance)...
