hey guys,

just wondering if anyone could recommend/share resources on what related texts i should do for eng adv and ext. my ext teacher heavily emphasised that your text for adv should be one of your texts for ext but im not too sure where i can get texts that overlap with each courses requirements.

my ext1 elective is worlds of upheaval so my teacher was saying texts with a strong sense of tragedy for human experience (adv) and a historical context of a world of upheaval (ext) would work well.

tysm!!

I didn't have a related text for english adv, but for ext 1 I have The Mark on the Wall by Virginia Woolf. I did Literary mindscapes so it works well.

I don't know what Worlds of upheaval consists of, but I think The Hunger Games is pretty good. And it's got plenty of analysis online you can find. I remember my extension teacher said to use a text that is well known or written by a well-known author to give your essay extra authenticity.

Also ext definitely needs a related text. They've asked in hsc before.

Some texts I can think of off the top of my head (aka by looking at my bookshelf):
  • A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles (strong historical context, personal hope/continuation of life and spirit in a seemingly tragic situation - personal favourite)
  • Catch-22 by Joseph Heller (satirical tragedy, war context)
  • Of Mice and Men by John Steinback (the american dream and its futility)
  • A Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe (descent into madness, the American Gothic) (honestly anything by Poe)
  • Educated by Tara Westover (biography - very good for the human experience I think I saw it as a short answer text once although maybe not tragedy, very religious family in rural America)
I can't immediately think of any films, plays, poems etc. I'm not as well-versed in those, sorry

My related text for Ext 1 is Farewell My Concubine, I used it in relation to the World of Upheaval unit. In terms of just adv, our school made us do an assignment using only a related text so I used the video game Persona 4.

Oh but I wouldn't recommend FMC unless you have a chinese background (its in chinese and the eng translations often doesn't give the film justice)....
