woodpark...tell me if you've heard of it...if not-
hands up who goes to sefton and thinks that we're screwed for all levels of english? all fo you? wonderful...i say for related material for rtfg we stick to songs-they're heaps better to remember and analyse...but to the guy who started this forum-what do you do if your teacher won't accept any new ideas and thinks that everything you have to say is second rate even though you've had it double marked from two independent sources who've given you first rate marks? whew...that sentence exhausted me...

i suffer with RFTG immensely, probably cos all the texts are set in wet, cold places such as newfoundland, cape breton and nova scotia but also because i have a plain ole aversion to them. don't know why.


RFTG stikes me as a negative concept, only because all the texts tend to portray global as bad and local as good, even though, like Mr Eldridge says, you should not catergorise it as such. So far our class has done the shipping news and the lost salt gift of blood in detail and both tend to give a fairly sympathetic view towards the local....

does anyone else find its difficult not to generalise though?

btw, fukuyama is done to death. quite literally. all the exemplar responses from BOS in the standards refer to him except i think the crap ones, so perhaps thats a clue.... it's good to look for original material though, the markers love it.

Yeah, my left-wing teachers are all presenting a very negative view of RFTG and it's pissing me off. All they're trying to do is show which one of them is more left than the other. FFS! One of them drives a BMW! (My mate and I bag him out a lot). I really can't stand them pushing their left-wing agenda on to me. I don't support the right either but they could at least present a balanced viewpoint. Hell, it's law for the ABC and radiocasters to present a variety of viewpoints on issues why the hell can't they or won't they?!

And www.politicalcompass.org shows me as being slightly left but more or less at the centre. Less than one unit towards left and about one unit towards authoritarian :p

One of the key concepts to understand in RFTG, and in Shipping News in particular, is to recognise that there is no attempt to polarize the global and local and that there is always the suggestion of a 'canteen culture'. RFTG doesn't really advocate a negative viewpoint of the global, but its a suggestion as to the possible causes and effects of a retreat.

and imho, The Bone People advocates a retreating from the global. I mean, if you look at it, the global gets NO input in the whole novel. Global is pretty much represented by Simon (think about it for a bit), and the causes/consequences of globalisation are represented by Joe.

However, once they both retreat from the global, both are healed.

hehehe, i s'pose I'm so "passionate" about this cause we just did a 1500 words essay on it. :)

how many poems have you guys been told to use in essays? we've been told two in detail, and a third in less detail, but there just isn't enough time to write on them all!:eek:

p.s. also, i was looking at the posts about thinkers earlier in this thread - we researched them really fleetingly, but have never had to write about them or anything! did anyone's teachers tell them to refer to them in essays or anything? if so i'm in trouble... :confused:

we've just started 'the castle' (also doing shipping news and SH poems).. i really enjoyed the movie.. but how does it relate to RFTG? any ideas pls?

I thought it was very blatantly RFTG.

-> focus on marginalised group in society (the Kerrigans literally live on the margins, uneducated, bad taste, Aussie accents - film humourises them, but also champions their right to live the way they want to)

-> text is a little resistant - it is clearly opposed to the Barlo Group, but the film is not intended to be socialist. It questions the binary opposition of good/bad. It does challenge the grand narrative of PROGRESS though - key RFTG idea. It also questions the boundaries between high and low culture - it challenges elitism. Basically it approached grand-narratives with ambiguity ( that history is progressive, that economic rationalism will be better for all)

-> ways of thinking: post-modernist (borrows a few elements)
. text is self-reflective - use of satire, film constantly 'checks' itself (eg. When Darrel tells his son to put the gun down - it's also saying 'Don't take this so seriously, this is satire/exaggeration'
. intertextuality - the Aboriginal condition

-> ways of thinking: post-colonial - in that it privledges local culture

-> ways of thinking: Foucault - dominant culture's use of language and language institutions to reinforce its power. (eg. It took Lorry's voice to articulate Darrel's words. And when Judge throws Darrel out of court because he didn't have the knowledge to uphold his case - he lacks the language that institution demanded and thus he is excluded from it.)

Hmmm I think that should be a good start. :)

In terms of theory what do you think is required?

So far I have Fukuyama as a my theorist that advocates liberal economics as a means of collapsing boundaries but conversely says that homogenisation does not happen.
And then there is the concept of late capitalism that explains that through the commodification of everything that values outside of dollar value takes second place and due to the collapse of boundaries as explained by Foucalt the global is inescapable. With this people tend to chase comfort over values and so homogenisation coupled with the complete dominance of the US means that in essence globalisation as practiced at present is another phase of imperialism.

I lean heavily to the latter but if anyone can aid in the theory part it would be much appreciated.

The fact that 'The Castle' and 'The Bone People' were created shows how post-modernism is taking effect and focusing on the cultures of specific areas. It also has the effect of giving pride to those cultures. Notice how both of those texts also use the feature of specialised language (Australian English, Maori) which is also one of the impacts of post-modernism as a way of thinking.

Many theorists see the current phase of globalisation as strengthening localisation as opposed to destroying it. This is because it's harder for those of a certain culture to connect with others because they are used to a certain "shared knowledge" between them. You can see this sort of thing happening. A particular example is say for instance you have a group of Australians in a foreign nation. They are likely to meetup and maybe form an ex-pat group or a club. All of a sudden they become a group amongst "the others". You can also see it with migrants. All this can be used in The Castle (especially between the "higher classes" and the Kerrigans).

Then again everything is a human construct isn't it?

I'm not sure, but I think you're going to need a good lot of analysis, theory, techniques and connections between ideas when you're writing the essay.

Another thread talks about ways of thinking in a bit more detail.

I opened up a sociology book at the uni and wham, all the answers were there. This course is a big fucking heap of sociological bullshit which means absolutely nothing. I hate it.

Ok, tell me where that book is Christian....

She did it again in class today... those damn articles.. "right, what are the main points.... ok, so what way of thinking does that reflect.... *silence*.. this is what your hsc is based on, you know..." there were a couple of mutters about actually TEACHING us what we're meant to be on about for the hsc.....

Yeah we have the same problem. The fuckers aren't telling us explicitly WHAT, they're trying to pull information from us they never told us.
