Weh? I've been to a lot. Only lived in Malaysia for a year, and lived/worked in Egypt for three months.
Oh, i've been to both countries too, but only for a couple of weeks, a long while ago.
Malaysia was beautiful. But, i didnt really like Egypt as much as Malaysia, the people living there are friendly and all (we got ripped off a bit though, but thats ok :p), but its the food that i didnt like much :\

Egyptians are typical of poorer Arabs in that they rip foreigners off like there's no tomorrow. If you want to not be ripped off, you need to factor in a few more minutes here and there for haggling and putting on a dramatic performance. I found that they dislike being spoken to in Modern Standard Arabic, as well.

No way?

We were invited to go to our head workman's house for lunch one arvo. It was right around the Eid (al-Adha) time, so they were cooking heaps of food.

I kinda knew where he lived (very rural and poor) and thought 'this is going to be really shit'.

Anyway, so we arrived there, and it was like hell on earth - kids and pets running around everywhere. The building looked like it was going to fall down, and there didn't appear to be any doors.

We got invited into the dining room, also a hole, and this giant bench table was just packed with food. I've never seen so much food. And Jesus Christ it was easily the best food I've ever had - no exaggeration. Outside of the molokhia (which is easily the worst dish on earth), it gave me an oral orgasm.

Hahaha, omg, i cant believe you know molokhia, lol! Yeah, i dont blame you, i also dont like it much either. But, believe it or not it takes ages to prepare, and from what i remember, egyptians and some other middle eastern countries make it like a soup kind of thing, but in other countries its just like the molokhia leaves with chicken and some chilli (it tastes a bit better then the soup, and its the only way i can eat it :p)

We practically ate in restaurants during our stay there, i guess thats why i didnt like the food much. The food you had was most probably homemade (which would taste better then restaurants), people in egyppt and in the surrounding areas love to cook for guests, they put so much effort in preparing it, i gotta say.

Western Civilization is the greatest most perfect thing to come out of this planet. I do not refute the validity or 'truth' of the corrupt values displayed in the program - no one can. But we can look to a more immediate goal of a strong and stable society. To this end, freedom without purpose is an infection on the West. Subjectivism, naval gazing, is an interal puss ball that will be our ultimate Downfall. As of now, the future belongs to the more disciplined peoples of Asia.
I wont give this petty middle-eastern crap the time of day

PwarYuex did you learn to speak Arabic during your stay in Egypt?

I'd like to learn to speak Arabic but would I learn Colloquial then MSA or MSA then Colloquial? Or?

I learnt how to read and write as well as the basics of MSA, the script before I left, I'd done a bit of Classical Arabic just for fun as well.

Most of my knowledge of the language, though, came from being there and picking stuff up... I remember a Lebanese taxi driver telling me the "password" to Egyptian bargaining - this little phrase that Egyptians love to hear and will always get you out of trouble.

I'd like to learn to speak Arabic but would I learn Colloquial then MSA or MSA then Colloquial? Or?
Without getting into the linguistics of the whole matter: It's debated.

If you're going to Egypt, for example, I don't think there's any point in learning MSA first. Speaking from experience, MSA (outside of writing) will just get you in trouble. My supervisor told me that it's pretty common for non-MSA speaking countries which have their strong dialects (Lebanon, Morocco, Egypt, etc) will dislike people speaking MSA to them.

Anyway, thankfully I didn't learn many practical phrases in MSA, so when I learnt them it was in Egyptian while I was there.

The big problem is finding a good teacher or textbook for non-MSA Arabic. It depends on where you're going for which book to get, but there's a fantastic Egyptian one called Kullu Tammam? which was great for me because it's very grammatical and straight-forward.

The big problem with these colloquial textbooks is that they inevitably use Latin script - because rendering colloquial Arabic into Arabic script sometimes doesn't always work. Problem is that the writing in the country will always be in Arabic script; so I really can't stress enough that if you learn colloquial Arabic, you also teach yourself the script. There's a fantastic little yellow book out there which I would recommend - can give you a link to it if you'd like.

Edit: Just noticed your username and av - should we be worried that you want to learn Arabic? :S

Yeah thanks a link would be nice. I can already read Quranic Arabic but I'm not sure if that would be too useful in learning the speech part of the language. I just need to learn how to understand it so I can figure out the activation instructions to this crate I got sent from Afghanistan.

Good luck if you don't already speak at least some Arabic. It's meant to be just about the hardest language for English speakers to learn.

It's not exactly a secret.

The State Department divides languages into three categories of difficulty. The first category includes languages that are closely related to English, such as Spanish or French. It is estimated that such a language would take a half-year of study to attain "general professional proficiency." The second category includes languages that differ significantly -- linguistically or culturally -- from English. Think Greek, Russian, Vietnamese. They would take a full year. Finally, there are four languages considered "exceptionally difficult" for native English speakers to master. For these four -- Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean -- it would take two years of study to achieve proficiency, with the second year of study occurring in the foreign country.

another sign of backwardness from saudi arabai. you got to really wonder wtf is going wrong in that fucked up country. over the years i have lost so much faith in these backwardness arabs. they have just hijacked islam with their fucked up whabism and is really pissing me off.

ofcourse, the dumb arab lasy in the story blamed it on sharia law. how fucked can some1 be. seriously. HOW FUCKED IN THE HEAD. well you no whatShariah Law is not compatible with the principles of freedom, democracy and 21st century society. Muslims have two options: we can continue the ccof Saudi Arabia, the Taliban, Osama bin Laden, Muslim Brotherhood, al Qaeda, Hizbut Tahrir, etc and for ever be cavemen or we can reform ourselves to keep our rich cultural heritage and to cleanse the Muslim world from all the muck and rubbish that currently inhabits it.

I want Muslims to be able to live in harmony with people of all other religions, agnostics, and atheists. Isn't it time to stop Islamic extremists from using Islam as a weapon? Isn't it time to protect future generations of Muslims from being brainwashed by the radicals? If we do not stop the spread of Islamic extremism, Muslims will become a bunch of homicidal zombies.

The best way is to leave religion as a personal matter for every individual. Islam is not the only religion in the world. There are other people as well. Other people with different beliefs. And Muslims living in the non Muslim world have far more rights than non Muslims living in the Muslim world.......so stop bitching about the 'evil west'.

Islamic fascism is not the way forward. It is the way backwards.
all the muslims are going to start bashing me for bcoming pro-west. well im not pro-west. im pro-fucking-common-sense.

Nobody started it. It's basically like mini-skirts. They just keep getting... mini'er. It's pretty much the same with the cloth. Apparently Muhammad (saw)'s wife wore a head scarf. Now, the nuts that are bastardising the Islamic ideal of not wearing revealing clothing, have instead replaced it with wearing a tent.
