Weh? I've been to a lot. Only lived in Malaysia for a year, and lived/worked in Egypt for three months.

Oh, i've been to both countries too, but only for a couple of weeks, a long while ago.
Malaysia was beautiful. But, i didnt really like Egypt as much as Malaysia, the people living there are friendly and all (we got ripped off a bit though, but thats ok ), but its the food that i didnt like much :\

Egyptians are typical of poorer Arabs in that they rip foreigners off like there's no tomorrow. If you want to not be ripped off, you need to factor in a few more minutes here and there for haggling and putting on a dramatic performance. I found that they dislike being spoken to in Modern Standard Arabic, as well.

We were invited to go to our head workman's house for lunch one arvo. It was right around the Eid (al-Adha) time, so they were cooking heaps of food.

I kinda knew where he lived (very rural and poor) and thought 'this is going to be really shit'.

Anyway, so we arrived there, and it was like hell on earth - kids and pets running around everywhere. The building looked like it was going to fall down, and there didn't appear to be any doors.

We got invited into the dining room, also a hole, and this giant bench table was just packed with food. I've never seen so much food. And Jesus Christ it was easily the best food I've ever had - no exaggeration. Outside of the molokhia (which is easily the worst dish on earth), it gave me an oral orgasm.

But, believe it or not it takes ages to prepare, and from what i remember, egyptians and some other middle eastern countries make it like a soup kind of thing, but in other countries its just like the molokhia leaves with chicken and some chilli (it tastes a bit better then the soup, and its the only way i can eat it )

We practically ate in restaurants during our stay there, i guess thats why i didnt like the food much. The food you had was most probably homemade (which would taste better then restaurants), people in egyppt and in the surrounding areas love to cook for guests, they put so much effort in preparing it, i gotta say.

I learnt how to read and write as well as the basics of MSA, the script before I left, I'd done a bit of Classical Arabic just for fun as well.

Most of my knowledge of the language, though, came from being there and picking stuff up... I remember a Lebanese taxi driver telling me the "password" to Egyptian bargaining - this little phrase that Egyptians love to hear and will always get you out of trouble.

Without getting into the linguistics of the whole matter: It's debated.

If you're going to Egypt, for example, I don't think there's any point in learning MSA first. Speaking from experience, MSA (outside of writing) will just get you in trouble. My supervisor told me that it's pretty common for non-MSA speaking countries which have their strong dialects (Lebanon, Morocco, Egypt, etc) will dislike people speaking MSA to them.

Anyway, thankfully I didn't learn many practical phrases in MSA, so when I learnt them it was in Egyptian while I was there.

The big problem is finding a good teacher or textbook for non-MSA Arabic. It depends on where you're going for which book to get, but there's a fantastic Egyptian one called Kullu Tammam? which was great for me because it's very grammatical and straight-forward.

The big problem with these colloquial textbooks is that they inevitably use Latin script - because rendering colloquial Arabic into Arabic script sometimes doesn't always work. Problem is that the writing in the country will always be in Arabic script; so I really can't stress enough that if you learn colloquial Arabic, you also teach yourself the script. There's a fantastic little yellow book out there which I would recommend - can give you a link to it if you'd like.

Edit: Just noticed your username and av - should we be worried that you want to learn Arabic? :S

Yeah thanks a link would be nice. I can already read Quranic Arabic but I'm not sure if that would be too useful in learning the speech part of the language. I just need to learn how to understand it so I can figure out the activation instructions to this crate I got sent from Afghanistan.

Nobody started it. It's basically like mini-skirts. They just keep getting... mini'er. It's pretty much the same with the cloth. Apparently Muhammad (saw)'s wife wore a head scarf.
