Make massive upheavals of the labour party to get rid of all corruption, idiots and antiques. Easier said than done. Carmel Tebutt? Yeah shes a nice woman. She's the ex-education minister- got lots of good reviews for that job. btw govt. should secretly siphon funds from benefits towards dole-bludgers and use it on education and public transport. Especially trains. ffs, what type of country has the trains SLOWER, MORE EXPENSIVE and DIRTIER than cars? Do they really expect us to use greenhouse-friendly transport when the alternatives are inferior in every respect?

yep, great, the government is wasting the surplus by giving people who are on the dole who can't be bothered to get jobs, so we pay for their lives, $1000 dollars per kid for christmas, who are most likely to go out and spend it on booze, or gambling, nothing that is helping the economy at all, but the government is helping the community and the financial crisis. also, the people who pay more tax aren't even getting benefits. wow, they're just great aren't they?

You really are a fucking moron if you think a) that's what happened, or b) a fiscal stimulus is the only way the surplus (which still exists, for now) is being spent.

You might be interested to know that the financial crisis actually directly diminished the surplus without the government even raising a finger (by about 50% I believe). Not least of all because government revenue is based on taxes which are based on the strength of the economy.

I bet you're completely unaware of the tax cuts Rudd made in the middle of the year, or the part of the surplus he's used for infrastructure and business stimulus.

And you're right: the people who pay the most tax (i.e. the rich) didn't get part of the stimulus. This is because the biggest engine of consumption in capitalism is the lower and middle classes, not the upper class, but more importantly when the lower and middle classes get hit by a financial crisis, they are far more vulnerable then the upper class (because they have a smaller income base with which to buy the bare essentials), thus are more likely to stop consuming to ensure they can afford to live.

You might also be interested to know that Howard actually left a relatively small budget surplus (even though he wracked up a massive revenue over time) because he spent most of it during his terms.

And Trefoil, I feel we've had this discussion. We ended up, last time, agreeing that Rudd need to stimulate the economy and that this would cost large sums of money. We also agreed that he could have done it through more sensible means. (And by agree, I mean, I argued and you diverted the argument.)
