And you will rot and die.

Why are you on a ticket that clearly is an attempt to gain the left vote (Ecologically Sustainable Campus), when your policies are far from it?
Is this because you clearly recognise that the majority of students are more inclined to left policies. If so, your claims to 'represenation' are a joke.
The majority of voting students support left policies, yes. Note that the SULC is not the only one to run tickets that have nothing to do with their policies, NOLS is running the "Free Parking" ticket as well.

Free Parking is not inconsistent with our ideals though. Members of the Liberal Club (I'm thinking of Chris Koureas in particular) have argued that enough is already being down to promote renewable energy at university, at SRC meetings and possibly also in letters to Honi Soit. If you think he's wrong, can you explain why?

Well i hate everybody running for the SRC... I hate that dumb bastard Nick wood and his stupid posters (I think he's the best of the worst). I hate Karoline and her nazi-feminist ways... but most of all, I hate Choice.... BY FAR. I'm sorry.... but by going into a maths lecture and saying you support the ordinary students, and that choice will abolish the queer collective (and probably the womens collective while they're at it), and support for minority groups on campus, you aren't representing the average student, and certainly weren't representing the majority of that particular lecture. You are representing white, rich, educated middle class males, and quite frankly that pisses me off.

Also, why the fuck do you need to poster 50 posters over one noticeboard. Cant you all learn to share, with others who might want to advertise their events (like madsoc) Believe it or not, there are other things going on in the uni community apart from the SRC elections.

The fact that choice has totally abandoned USU-ism is another thing that pisses me off. Clubs and socs NEED money from the unions, to put on events that enrich the university atmosphere (no.. not all of them are everybody's cup of tea, but thats not my problem).Under VSU annual membership will be $240 per person per annum per club, risen from an average of $10 per annum. Club and socs will die... SUDS will die... and by choosing not to fight VSU, choice would sign the death sentence. (yes i understand that a lot of this is not exactly to do with SRC per se, but the SRC is the main voice of these concerns).

Fuck i hate election time.

ok fine... would YOU pay $240 for membership??

Running events costs money. Manning Bar costs money. Having to hire bouncers costs money. Getting proffessional teachers in for Verge costs money. Costumes cost money. We will now have to pay our own indemnity insurance.... guess what... that costs money too!!!! And Don't go and fucking tell me that clubs and socs events are a waste of time... the performance on thursday night was absolutely amazing... the turnout was awesome. Howver... we can't charge for entry because guess what??? Manning is a free space, and you can't charge for use of a free space. Without an arts grant from USU, the Dance performance, and dance comp would not have happened.

We did get a bunch of people together to run an event. This event required the coordination of over 20 people, including the clubs and socs office, and the verge coordinators. But hey.... events cost money. It is impossible to subsidise everything that we offer from our membership fees as they stand, alone

1) that figure was released by the union, based on the ability to recoup about $2 million through hard-selling

2) its not a private event. It is an event as part of Verge, Free to all members of the public

3) where else will we hold the event? we did it in the cellar theatre... i nearly broke my ankle dancing on that floor. We aren't allowed to use Sydney uni venues, only union venues. We have to pay for manning because we have to pay a bar guarentee. That's in the deal. You can't change that

4) funding cannot come from public sources like the government. the Australia council and the like simply cannot afford to fund non-proffessional ventures, because the liberal gov't doesn't support the arts, even though arts are the backbone of any society or culture

5) everybody contributes a small amount to these sorts of events because if they didn't the system simply wouldn't work.

regardless of which src candidate wins, vsu is going to be passed. it doesn't matter how much protesting gets done...they can rally til their blue in the face. (i mean, sure go for it, try if it might make a small difference). but seriosly, it's going to be passed. the government aren't going to listen to a bunch of university students. so whether a labor candidate or a liberal one gets voted in, vsu is going to come in. and its about high time that we start DEALING with vsu rather than trying to prevent it. coz we can't. simple.

i dont, however, think that everything is going to die once vsu comes in. yeh sure some things will be a bit more pricey (like the jugs of beer at manning), but tough shit. everywhere you go prices are rising.

Free parking encourages people to drive to university, thus using up more precious oil reserves than if they used public transport and contributing to global warming which, according to those on the Labor Club's side of the spectrum, is undesirable. This then means that free parking is inconsistent with your ideals.
Also I don't think Chris is a member of the SULC, and if he is he's certainly not an active one. Chris conducts his activities through SUEUA, not the Liberal Club.

I will admit that ESC is stretching the truth a fair amount, but I do believe that in making decisions both the economical and ecological effects should be considered, with approximately equal weighting.

For the final times, clubs and societies take up less than 3% of the Union's funding. They will be the last thing to go post-VSU.

So legal and appeal services are exclusive to white, middle class males? Does the fact that we have at least ten Asians on our various tickets lend support to this? Does the fact that we also have several women running make this so? Does the fact that I'm heading one of the tickets when my household has a taxable income equal to somewhere between zero and nothing mean that Choice is only for middle-class students?
ok fine... would YOU pay $240 for membership??
Yes, I most certainly would.

You, my dear, need to check your facts before misinterpreting the aims of a ticket (and results of VSU) completely.

we need to realise that not everyone is equal, and not everyone is going to be treated equal. it's the way the world goes (fortunately or unfortunately). i seriously doubt any of the candidates (left, right, centre, far right, far left, semi-right, etc) are going to ensure that "everyone gets treated equally" at uni. if you're seriously waiting for everyone to be treated "equally" and "fairly", then i suggest you get yourself a pillow to rest on....you're in for a LOOOOOONG wait.

Im not sure if I should start a new thread for this, but Ill just put the question here

Assuming that VSU comes in (which is a reasonably safe assumption), what do you think will be cut from the union expenditure? What do you think they will charge come next year? What services will stay and what services will go? This is not a 'what do you think should happen' but 'what do you think will happen', nor is it a 'uni life will be destroyed' or 'uni life will be exactly the same' question. But assuming that they will cut services to make fees cheaper so that more people will pay, what do you think they will cut.

The likely consequences are that most things will remain, but they will cost a little more (eg it will cost maybe $5 to get into Beach/Snow Ball), and Union buildings will become privatised. Things such as the art gallery in Wentworth are also likely to be sold off.

I'll ask a board director on Monday and get back to you with an exact answer then.

Yep. VSU is coming. Whether it's bad or not is not my debate - all I care about is sustainable management for the SRC. And the only team able to accomplish fair and sensible leadership of the SRC under either a USU or VSU environment is RESOLVE.

And the central theme of democracy is choice, and choice leads to freedom of association. ||

I don't want communism. I want democratic socialism. That is democracy in politics and democracy in the market.
You would have to operationalize the terms though. "democracy in the market" doesn't say much really at all. Just a cliche isn't it? It can really cover a whole range of possible versions of 'democracy'.

I mean democracy is a sweet word and all, but so are lots of words.

Why not spruik 'self-determination socialism'?

Another PC term of interest that I just now coined for pedagogic purpose.

It's not the SRC's job to make assumptions like that. The SRC has ONLY ONE JOB - and that's to REPRESENT Students. It's a "Student REPRESENTATIVE Council" and it should be working FIRST AND FOREMOST to actually DO that. It's not the "Student's Socialist Council" or the "Anti-Bourgeois Association" or the "Democratic Socialist Party". It's the University of Sydney Student Representative Council - and as such it should respect the viewpoints of Conservative students, Libertarian students, Economically Left students, Economically Right students, students who are homosexual, students who are homophobic, students who have green hair, students who have pink eyes, students who have three testicles, students who have half a brain.
