Some people would have been following the Sri Lankan conflict recently. But not all, and that is the point I would like to make.

The situation in Sri Lanka draws a lot of parallels to the situation in Gaza earlier this year, although it is arguably more serious in the sense of the civilian death toll (estimates ranging from 2000+). Here are people (who I do not support/criticize) fighting for an independent homeland against a democratic (socialist) country which should be held to a higher standard for possibly perpetrating war crimes and showing lack of regard for civilian life. Palestinians and Israel?

Just like in the Gaza conflict, the UN has expressed "grave concerns" at the "worsening humanitarian crisis."

UN Security Council voices "grave concerns" at humanitarian situation in northeastern Sri Lanka_English_Xinhua

Taking note of the larger death toll in Sri Lanka and the huge amount of displaced persons, one could argue that the situation in Sri Lanka is even more serious than the situation was in Gaza, but that is irrelevant.

The fact is, there has been little uproar from the media as there was in Gaza, this is the FIRST thread on the Sri Lanka conflict, which has only come out after it has been resolved compared with numerous threads on the Gaza conflict flaming Israel. The world is remaining largely silent in comparison to the uproar over Gaza.

During the Gaza war The Age newspaper in Victoria ran a number of front page, graphic stories on the plight of the Palestinians in Gaza, numerous editorials criticizing Israel and yet it has had barely acceptable coverage of the Sri Lankan conflict, both in the 'front page' sensationalist sense and in its editorial sense. Even the usually vocal opinion section of The Age is largely quiet on the Sri Lankan conflict.

Are all those who criticized Israel druing the Gaza war and have now remained silent on this conflict hippocrits?

Discuss. Justify yourselves.

You're not really comparing the situation in Sri Lanka with the Gaza one are you? I mean that's ridiculous.

You could compare it to the situation in Northern Iraq with the Kurds. Of course it was much different in that sense because Iraq had oil. The US used it to wage a propoganda war against Iraq and later as a justification for the killing of Saddam and the continued occupation in Iraq.

Again, nobody sided with the separatists/terrorists unless it could be used to their benefit. Who supported the Kurds when Saddam launched his war against them? Not the international community. Infact they were still selling them weapons. Notably Germany, America, Britain and even the Russians.

For the most part, it is the terrorists themselves whom are responsible for tightening the screws of oppression upon their own people. This is part of their aim; to further justify their hardline causes from the counter clampdown, to mobilise the mainstream and publicise their struggle. Their violence and acts of inhumanity are aimed at specifically this response.

I'm sorry, but terrorism is terrorism.........a self perpetuating violence upon innocent human life to further political and religious causes be they relevant or not.

The apologetics (esp. wanker socialists) will never understand that terrorism is a form of oppression.

For flying fucks sake. The Sinhala majorty beleive they belong to the Aryan race and as a result superior to the Tamils.

You're all the fucking same.

And for fucks sake, why the fuck are we seeing violence on our streets. Your parents came to Australia for freedom, and yet these Tamil cunts (2nd generation onwards) who have absolutely know idea about the situation back at home now represent the oppressed. Go fuck yourselves.

Let’s not delve on the Idea that the Tamils are not discriminated against, THEY ARE. However, the Tamil tigers blow up Sinhala restaurants for a lol.

Its not lol when 20+ people die.

The difference is it's easier to be an apologist for the palestinians because you can just attack Israel and the US.

Firstly the Sinhalese have been on that island continuously going back thousands of years, they didn't get the British to carve them out an arbitrary spot to all migrate from Europe a few decades ago then defend it with force.

Secondly unlike palestinians the majority of Tamils don't give a fuck about an independent homeland, it's only extremists causing the violence...

I clearly am. Why is it ridiculous? Justify your point please, I don't see how it is ridiculous at all. I think the Israel-Hamas conflict bears many similarities to the Sri Lanka-Tamil conflict.

What I think is ridiculous is that those who cried murder at Israel during the Gaza conflict are now remaining silent in the face of a similar conflict. Their silence not only represents hypocrisy on their part, but also blatant bias which I believe they can no longer hide from as a result of their silence on this issue. It is a brazen act for those critics of Israel to hold Israel to a higher account than any other country that claims to be a Western democracy. I would go so far as to say that those who criticize Israel but cannot legitimize critique of Sri Lanka as covering up their antisemitism with anti-Israel rhetoric.

I would really like to hear a response from one of those BoS individuals who was so vocal on Israel and remains silent on other situations like the Sri Lankan one.

I disagree. Who is to determine who the 'bad guys' are?

How can you justify the endeavors of Hamas who want independence over the Tamil Tigers who want independence?

How are the Sri Lankan military 'good guys' and the Israeli army 'bad guys' when the Sri Lankan army is being accused of heinous war crimes as well? Your answer defines the hypocrisy I am pointing out here. Justify your claims.

how do you define the Sri Lankan government/army as the "good guys" and the Tamil Tigers as the "bad guys"?
I acknowledge that the Tamil Tigers have also done wrong, and am in no way condoning terrorism, however the Tamil people have been discriminated against and marginalised by the Sri Lankan government for decades.

Tamils are denied fair entrance into schools and universities, face discrimination when applying for jobs, are grossly underrepresented in government, face harassment and unfair treatment by police. Every day disappearances of Tamil people who speak out against the government are reported in Colombo
When hundreds of Tamils were killed and thousands of their homes were destroyed by Sinhala mobs in the 1980s, the government and police turned a blind eye.

Add to that the fact that the government have been committing systematic ethnic cleansing- tens of thousands of civilians have been killed in the last year. "Civilian safe zones" and hospitals have been bombed. The government does not allow foreign media into the conflict zone, and report their own fabricated figures of civilian casualties. They can continue to commit genocide, and justify it as simply removing the theat of terrorism.

seriously, can you still call them the good guys?

EDIT: just read that you were being sarcastic...d'oh. but anyway my opinion stands- any one who if pro-Sri Lankan government please reply

I don't live in these forums, so I don't know how you normally structure your arguments. Seems I'm not the only one. Make it more apparent for the unenlightened.

I'm conflicted in my opinion.
I believe that the Tamil people have been persecuted for generations, and if they are not going to be given equal treatment by the Sri Lankan government, they deserve the right to self determination. But how can they go about achieving either of these goals? The Sri Lankan Government has never responded to diplomacy or calls for a political solution to the isse, and militarily, even at their peak, the Tigers were grossly outnumbered by the Sri Lankan Army, and far less well equipped. The only way they were ever able to have any success (controlled nearly a third of SL a couple of years ago), was through guerrilla warfare, and yes, terrorism.

The Sri Lankan government will continue to act the way it has since 1948 unless under significant pressure from the international community. but then the international community hasn't given a flying fuck for so many years. and even now i doubt many countries are willing to do anything significant- India and China support the Sri Lankan government for their own reasons (trying to maintain dominance of the region), and I doubt any one wants to fuck with them, even if a million Tamils are killed whilst they turn a blind eye.

Now that the Tigers are essentially defunct, tens of thousand civilians dead and the Sri lankan government showing no signs of changing any of its policies of discrimination, its a pretty sad state of affairs for any remaining Tamils in Sri Lanka (though huge numbers are trying to get the fuck out- see all the Tamil refugees trying to gain entrance into Australia in the last couple of months)
