Re: The Official Tennis Thread

Damn, Duckworth put up a good effort even though he lost. Kavcic won 3-6 6-3 6-4 6-7(3) 10-8

Tomic's through. Glad, but can't wait for him to play Fed.

She beat Kvitova in 3 sets, but the game lasted for 3.5 hours! I think the third set was 11-9 hahaha

Williams seemed a little down today :/ (I was going for Maria anyway)
But hopefully I can watch the Federer-Tomic one tomorrow!!

Also, dumb question, but can someone tell me what determines if a match goes for 2 or 3 sets? I haven't been able to figure it out!

Girls play three-set max matches so it's the first person to win two sets.

Guys play five-set max matches so it's the first person to win three sets.

Is that the answer you're looking for...?

Re: The Official Tennis Thread

Wow really? Why can't girls play 5-setters?
They're definitely tough enough, otherwise Kvitova and Robson would have been dead after their 20 game 3rd set.

Mathematically it makes sense though

Re: The Official Tennis Thread

Best match of the tournament!
Djokovic vs Wawrinka was amazing tennis
12-10 in the fifth - it could have went either way
Fed, Murray, Ferrer and everyone else would have paid close attention to this match

Best match of the year probs. Still too early to say but this WAS AMAZING. Heck, it was better than last year's final...

Wawrinka the underdog:
- Was close to being 2 sets up. But dipped in form. He did amazingly well to win the 4th set and force the 5th.
- Stan produced like 95% of the best winners imho.... All the shotmaking came from Stan... He played offensive tennis, dictating play... Oh don't get me started on his graceful yet venomous backhand.... That thing was on fire.

IMHO, Stan played the better tennis.

Djokovic just has the physical advantage.... he pushes the ball back in more... hoping for Stan to commit and do an unforced error.... Way less winners coming from Novak....

I wished Stan had won. But the AO surface favours people who push the ball back in/defensive grinding and doesn't reward pure-striking tennis....

Another example = Monfils vs Simon. Simon just pushed and pushed, waiting for the Monfil errors.
