Violence erupts in Sydney over anti-Islam film (1 Viewer)

Violence has erupted in central Sydney as hundreds of Muslims protest against a controversial film about the Prophet Mohammed.

It is the latest in a series of demonstrations that have killed at least six people in the Middle East. Protestors have also marched through London.


The wave of protests spread to Sydney's CBD this afternoon, beginning outside the United States Consulate and spreading through the city's streets to Hyde Park.


The ABC understands the protest was sparked by a mass text message saying: "We must defend the honour of our prophet, we must act now."


NSW Police Superintendent Mark Walton said the demonstration was unorganised and some protesters "came forearmed to cause damage".


He said up to 150 police officers were called to the protest. Six officers were injured during the afternoon and two were taken to hospital for treatment.


Superintendent Walton said the protesters left the demonstration by 6:00pm.

No Australian parent should be photographing their child holding a sign saying people should be beheaded. Any parent who thinks that is okay should have their children taken away from them for the good of the children.

The footage I seen didn't look like police brutality.
- Police officer with blood streaming down his face
- Police officer on the ground with 'protestors' on top of him
- Riot squad officer has his shoulder dislocated
- Riot squad officer knocked unconscious and with head injuries by 'protestors'

The protestors chant of "Obama, Obama, we love Osama" is absolutely disgusting. Surely they must have committed some crime or violated terrorism propaganda laws with it?

Late in the afternoon a lone man from outside the group shouted: "Shame on you for promoting murder in the name of religion."
The crowd swarmed at him attacking him and sparking a second wave of violent clashes with police.
