Macquirie? why?
Other? why?

If its Macq, I seriously don't get why it's the best cos the uni overall seems second rate compared to the big ones: UNSW and Usyd...

And what combined degree goes well with Actuaries?

Macquarie for sure. :)

What do you mean 'second rate'? They're the best in the field of actuarials! I thought only UMQ and UNSW offer actuarials in Sydney, how do you mean 'second rate'???

Actuary/LLB :uhhuh:

Others I like are:

Finance, and
Accounting

:)

i think ANU offers actuary as well... since when did USYD offer actuary? i know UNSW you have to major in it via a Bcom. IN fact, Actuary/LLB has just been introed into Macq. I wonder what the cut off for that would be  Mac uni is the best for actuary because it was the first uni to teach actuary - go to the Mac uni section of the forum and there should be a subforum for actuarial studie. ;)

Macquarie started acturaial studies in australia.

The other unis only got it when academics from maquarie moved out.

Personally i think UNSW is a better uni, since it is better for the other degrees if you want to do a double degree.

but i wonder how a math / science nerd like me wud do in law
you'd be surprised
law involves a lot of critical thinking and problem solving - and thats where a strong base in maths becomes handy

hmmm
cos I know from widespread opinion Macq is the best for Actuarial but Macq is overall a crapper uni than UNSW

Ill consider combined law at unsw then :) and its even lower than combined law at macq which is surprising...

Macquarie is best for Actuarial Studies. If you go to UNSW to do Actuarial Studies, it's like going to K-Mart to buy bread, when you have a bakery next door; sure, K-Mart might be better than the bakery next door for most other things, but for bread, the bakery is better!

On a more serious note, Macquarie has an internationally recognised Actuarial program and has been around since the late 1960s. And being the first in Australia, you'll find the vast majority of actuaries are from Macq, if they studied through a uni. Employers know what to expect from an actuarial who has graduated from Macq. Well, maybe Macq isn't the best place for actuarial if you consider how hard it is. It's too hard, imo. Well, it prepares you much better as an actuary than UNSW, consequently. (On second thoughts, go to UNSW, it's easier and less competitive there!)

Macq "created" the Control Cycle, which is used for Part II (and is "the" one the Institute uses for it's Distant Education for Part II).

If you want to be an actuary, go to Macq. If you want an actuarial degree but don't really want to be an actuary, go to UNSW.

Oh, and the Head of the UNSW Actuarial Deptment was poached from Macq (too bad they couldn't poach John Pollard or Shepherd). :D

interesting...
so it IS internationally recognised
i always had the impression Macq was some unknown small uni which other countries never heard of.
Everyone knows UNSW though, it has a good rep n all..

A couple of dudes i know doin acts at unsw argue that although acts at macq is better, the uni's rep tarnishes employment opportunities or somethin.

Macq is internationally recognised for it's Actuarial Studies program (as opposed to UNSW). I didn't say for everything, because they'd be false. :p

Well, if you're employer is from Macq uni (because you want to be actuary), good luck! :p

yeh macquarie specialises in acturials... go there... although i've got a few acturial friends... and well yeahh "it's fucking hard"......

just because you get into macquarie acturials doesn't mean you'll come out with an acturials degree.

Macquarie has this inside saying "easy to get in, hard to get out"

as for the easy to get in part... i don't think thats true either!!
