its a close call between english and maths. both have parts that, for me, are completely irrelevant. I mean, i want to go into childcare. So, when on earth will i
-analyse movies/poems etc
- use trigonometry
-use calculus
- ever again care what a metaphor/simile/ and those other annoying words are
- write a feature article
- write an interview (this being said, i also had to answer the interview from the perspective of an American director and a dead poet)

On the other hand, financial maths i will use in taxes and stuff and english teaches you better skills, and how to look at the media critically.
So good and bad in all subjects i reckon
you can come up with a formula for how much they crap, then minimise it with calculus lol.

of course you wont need maths and english if you are going to be cleaning up shit your whole life for minimum wage.

thats just because your crap. maths is concrete, you know what you must do to get marks, which is not the case in english. You could give the same essay to 15 different english markers, and you would get 15 COMPLETELY different marks, in maths it doesnt matter who marks it, you would get the same marks.

maths seems to the be the most effective subject at sorting people out (those that work and those that dont), since you cant just write "pages of crap" and bludge.
That's not true. Writing pages of 'crap' in English will not get you good marks. Whoever said maths is evil is mistaken, though, I agree. The problem with Mathematics in schools though is that it moves too quickly. I like maths, but I like to be able to learn at my own pace. Also, maths in schools is not taught very well in my opinion. There's no opportunity for students to experience the fun that comes with seeing patterns and problem solving without having to worry about being marked down for mistakes, which are just a way of learning. I guess I like maths, I just don't like maths tests. I don't think it's a subject that should be tested. You should be able to learn in your own style and acquire knowledge that it relevant to you. And whoever said maths isn't relevant, that's what makes it fun, it's an escape. :)

Extension 2 math, the topic of mechanics is impossibly hard.
And english of course, not only because its compulsory but it seems extremely difficult to do anything right and impossible to get full marks.

ancient history, how the hell is knowing the name of the aztec kings wife gonna help us in todays society?
Dude, you know that kind of thing is going to be in ancient history, why would you pick it if you had such a problem with that? On that note, its more figuring out the name of the Aztecs kings wife that will help you in society, mad analysis skills.

lol, if you think math at school moves quickly...

nah man, all that stuff can be applied to the real world. The 4u maths course is practically physics. it really depends on what you want to do. personally, english is the biggest waste of time for me. it's ruined my life. i can't watch a movie anymore without bloody analysing every scene.

regurgitating does not help - thats what you do for pe and sciences and stuff. english has to be written properly and thats where most people fall apart. most people know their stuff, they just dont know how to write it.

my least fav subject is physics - dropping it after yr 11 was equal best subject decision of my life - other was doing standard instead of advanced. physics is a heap of stuff that never has to get done. in maths for example, the questions will not answer themselves whereas in physics no matter what you do the world will still be the same. why know why the world is is its not gunna change anything?
That's not right man. physics isnt about changing the physical world it's about understanding it and utilizing it. without physics we wouldn't launnch into space, have car engines, computers, the internet, GPS, CD's, DVD's, theme park rides, and heaps of stuff people take for granted.
to me its the best subject. what people dont realise is that 90% of maths was either invented to solve phsics problems or to deal with money

English. Oh god, English by far (and to a lesser degree, the Histories, but I don't take them).

It all depends on the marker. If (s)he is a fair, decent marker, then no harm done. If you can draw good arguments from your texts and back them up with evidence, you will get a high mark.

But if you have a complete BITCH of a marker (I know I did- I had another teacher look at it and they said I should have scored /much/ higher), then, unless your interpretation matches theirs EXACTLY, you will lose marks purely because you disagree on what the author was trying to convey through his character's actions (or something). It can. and most of the time is, completely biased, unlike maths, which is to me the best possible subject imaginable. It has varying degrees of difficulty to cater for the strong-minded and the not-so-strong-minded "^^, and there can almost be no bias whatsoever. The marker has little influence on you mark, as opposed to the humanities papers.

nothing is all that useful unless you get into a career with it.
- English isn't that useful as a subject, as metaphors are useless in modern society. thus, it is evil.
- maths is useless, as once you know how to add, subtract etc, you'll be set, and thus won't need calculus or parametrics. thus, it is evil.
- economics is alright, as it can help you understand what to do with your money, and where it goes etc, but still, not all that useful.
- sciences are pointless unless you plan on becoming a scientist or a chemical or biological terrorist
- languages aren't that bad, as they have some practical use, but not that necessary.
- histories can help you, say, learn about people, but not much better than sitting and watching people walk past in a cafe
no much is useful in life, so i think we should all start learning, say, self defense or survival techniques, because similes won't kill you a rabbit for dinner as well as a nicely timed elbow stab. =]

btw, w00t first post as a bos member =]

lol, its not useful until you think about making a career out of it. I think that's the whole crux of the matter to be honest. Whats 'useful' for everyday life will always vary from person to person- there is no standardised answer.

your an idiot.

1. i hate english yet i still understand why we are taught it, the use of metaphors are used in polictics, and in advertising to capture peoples emotions to sell shit etc.

2. Calculus and parametrics are used in physics, industrial chemistry, profit maximisation, projectiles motion..... in short everything.

3. Economics is about how important international finance markets are in allowing growth, and the trade of goods and services that allows countries to specialise in production, increasing living standards globally. WHERE WOULD WE BE WITHOUT BANKS AND BIG BUSINESS?

4. Science is not about training mad scientists, it is about teaching people about the impact of technology on society and on the environment. It provides people with the skills to question and critically evaluate government's environmental policy. For example, everyone has had it drummed into them by the media that green energy is better for the environment but what impacts will this have on prices??. HAVE YOU NOT BEEN TAUGHT THIS AT SCHOOL??.
