does anyone else find it disturbing that there are now tv ads for jesus?

i find it unsettling, it seems to insinuate that the church these days is just a corporation, and i don't understand what's with the ads? do they think they'll convert people by saying how sunburn is crap, but jesus has the answers?

I think you have a point there....

and i'm sure the money spent advertising could be better spent on charities etc. I mean I think they have a better chance of converting people they;ve helped than just advertising on tv.

well not saying that i endorse what they're doing (cos i havn't seen the ads myself).. but instead of taking a negative view on the church i think it's more a reflection of society. that everyone is so in sync with the media, that the only way left to reach out to people is through television etc. i mean essentially it's the same as when evangelists come to your door, they attempt to advertise their religion and ultimately convert a few lost souls. but most of us send them away anyway, so now they've resorted to the tv.

however in saying that i havn't actually seen the ads so who knows i might find the ads themselves 'upsettling' but the fact that they're using television i'm okay with. :)

the ad is on the link :). it's not upsetting or anything, i just find it really odd, and commercialised. it's actually a cute ad, and if it wasn't for jesus i would probably like it. and that's not saying that i'm trying to take a negative view on the church, i just find it unsettling, the amount of effort put into advertising when i've been led to believe that the church stands for other ideals?

and, basically what mazarati was saying, surely they could spend their money on better things? the evangelists are choosing to do with their time what they wish, and said time wouldn't cost thousands/millions of dollars as i'm assuming an ad campaign on prime time tv would be.

They know that they're losing members and people aren't living their faith so strictly these days, so maybe with hip TV ads like this they hope to bring a few people in who just want to learn more, or people who just want a lil' guidance.

Modernization and shit.

just watched the ad, it's pretty cute

well as you've said they could be spending that money on the poor etc. as most people would expect the church to do. but i guess an aspect of Jesus' teachings that most people over look was to go forth, and preach the word of the Lord, baptise as many, bring the lost sheep to the shephard .. you know what i'm saying. so i guess while yes they could be helping people who are dying physically, i think society is dying spiritually and are in equal need of help/attention. and as i mentioned previously, this seems the appropriate medium to do so.

Spreading the good news has always been the core business of the Church, but our propaganda has nothing on the market's in the modern age.

Iron, these arn't catholic ads, there set up by a combined protestant church....

Dani, the purpose of these ads is to raise public awareness of jesus, as ads i admit they are pretty crap! Its a full blitz thats been going on for a while now, Remember that we nbeleive the best thing we can physically do for someone is bring them to christ so from our point of view, these ads a better spending of money than giving it to homeless people....ministry is more important than charity

I know christians who rationalise as follows: No point of charities as they are not everlasting,e vangalising is their number one motive as that will have eternal consequences.

On the notice boards on one of the local churches, they've started advertising- 'ray white, the only real estate with soul'.

The final moans of a dieing cult. Good Riddance.
sigh... who unbanned the git who doesn't contribute anything to the conversation?

Ha.
That disturbs me... a lot...

I know christians who rationalise as follows: No point of charities as they are not everlasting,e vangalising is their number one motive as that will have eternal consequences.
That is on some level true.

However you should probably all try and understand the rationale behind the campaign. There is a negative image of the Church inherent in society. Church is about RULES, church is about NOT GOING TO HELL, people who go to church are boring people who play dull games that aren't actually fun, people who go to church are spoonfed idiots etc etc....

The advertising campaign is aimed at achieving 2 things. 1) Making people think about who Jesus actually is. 2) In thinking about that, realising that people who are Christians aren't all a bunch of conservative, anti-gay, anti-fun douchebags.

One of the surveys that encouraged this campaign said that I think it was 70% of Sydneysiders don't know a Christian, or haven't had a conversation with a Christian friend about who Jesus is.

On the issues of charity. Christians have started more Charities than anyone else, and are the largest group of regular contributers. I think you'll also find that the income that these charities have been receiving from the church hasn't changed due to this. This campaign has been planned for a long time, and money has been put away gradually for it, so as not to have to stop any of the important work the churches involved are doing. It's more likely to mean that churches didn't use that little bit extra in the budget to buy a new commercial dishwasher or something...

I think the main point of the ads isn't so much to convert people, but more to just get people talking about Christianity etc. They provide a starting point for discussions. (Like this thread.)
