Do the employers look at your grades from the first year or is it the final year that really counts ??

It's important because lots of jobs require you to enter your WAM/GPA for the application and if you don't make the certain cut off the company wants, then you could immediately be rejected.
Of course, it's better to do better in your final years than first year, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't care about your first year grades.

I'm just worried that if I don't get all HDs, I will not get a proper job.
What is the 'standard' grade that you should get ?? I'm not just talking about passing. Distinction at least ?

What degree do you want to do? and what sorts of jobs are you looking for? Usually, for most degrees, Distinction is a suitable grade that will make you more competitive. But if you're intending to do Engineering and other very difficult courses, perhaps pass is enough (provided that you have practical experience)
It depends on a variety of factors, like the degree you do, etc. With a degree like dentistry, medicine or optometry, marks would probably not matters as much as they would for say business or law.
Also, try and focus on things such as extra-cirricular activities and work experience (or a cadetship, internship etc) whilst you're in university. For most employers, a graduate who has work experience in the field and recieves strong recommedations from that experience will be far more appealing than a person who has a HD average and not much else.

How do I get a work experience?? I was thinking of getting a job but it would be nice if I could do a work experience.
And I am doing flexible first year; and will be moving to Civil/Renewable/PV area. Perhaps petroleum or mining if they interest me (since the pay is great)

You will have to ring around and start networking with professionals. Career events which faculties hold are a good place to start.
Just be proactive.

To get work experience, just apply for jobs at around July and start around November. Not only that, I reckon participating and volunteering in societies would be great.
You'd usually get internships in 2nd or 3rd year.

There's no need to only apply for the work experience positions when advertised. Smaller firms never put those advertisements out yet they like the idea of training university kids on lower pay with the prospect of full employment at graduation.
It's a good strategy to follow because the vast majority of university students choose to only apply for advertised positions thus the demand is extremely high.

Aim for as high as possible - that said - Credit average or higher is what you generally will need.

Make your grades as best as you can. I wish to apply for postgraduate medicine, so GPA is considered in the application process thus I want to be achieving HDs in everything (but it's never quite that simple).

Depending on your circumstances, the grades you get in your first year and all years can be quite important - I personally am on a scholarship that requires me to achieve a distinction average per semester, so clearly I would have to be quite concerned about my grades each semester, irrespective of whether it is my first or last year of university study.
The grades you get in every unit you do will affect your grade point average (GPA). It is going to be difficult to get any job if the recession into which we are heading continues for a number of years. Also as there are many more people with degree having a degree will not give you much of an edge. It will be how well you did in the degree that will give you the edge.

If you look at the unemployment rate over the past decade, the current rate is roughly average comparing the peaks within this period. It was worse in the early 2000s compared to now. Please cite your source so I can have a look.
Work experience is always the best way to get ahead and the opportunity is always there provided you know when to ask.
