I missed out on the first round although I'll be eligible this year. Personally, I found attempting to get a good ATAR considerably harder and less rewarding.

You were going for medicine :(. I had enough for the course I wanted. But with reference to effort it was a massive failure and I will unwillingly bear it as a mark of shame until the day I die.
