It could simply be 2 unit questions except that you need to add two volumes or take away intersecting volumes etc. For example see the last question in this JR paper to get an idea.

It sometimes appears in probability questions. Usually the first few parts are ordinary ones and then the last part requires this formula.

Have a look at the library (not your school one, the local library), for books, many will have quotes or have been written by historians themselves so see if you can pull some quotes from there. Failing that, make a good quote up and use a little known historian's name, they'll never know ;)
