    time management @ uni

At some point, you've got to start learning by yourself. If you can't do it at uni, you really shouldn't be there.

    Fitzpatrick 2 Unit Book

The syllabus hasn't changed much since the early 1980s, so I think it still covers the modern course. What happens if and when we get the new syllabus... who knows?

5yrs degree salary > 4 yrs degree salary

Yep, and the glass ceiling is no higher for 5 year trained teachers. Actually, if you want to move into an admin role at a school thesedays, you will probably need to get an MEd, so I think you would be better off getting a 4 year degree, starting work a year earlier, and doing your MEd part...

should teachers teach beyond the syllabus

But the syllabus was never intended to represent the outer limits of what teachers should teach. If you look at the 7-10 syllabus, at any rate, on p14 there is a (non-exhaustive) list of suggested topics for additional content. So the idea that teachers can/should/are allowed to teach beyond...

Application of Series + 1 Calculus

When you use LaTeX, you need to put dollar signs around the stuff that is meant to be in maths mode. Otherwise it will all end up in italics with no spaces in between

Students who do harder maths/physics vs. normal maths/physics

Higher and ordinary maths in first year are not that different - basically the same material is covered, but the approach is a bit more abstract in higher maths. The gap between the higher and ordinary gets much bigger in 2nd and 3rd year, so by the end of the degree, if you've done the higher...

    MATH1011 and MATH1131... which one should i choose ?

I think that you have to do 1151 if your want to major in actuarial studies.

Ultimate Guide to First Year Maths

Yes, it is common to do second year units in first year. The school of maths is very obliging if they think that you have talent. You will still have to do the first year courses, though - even the guys who get state rankings in 4u have to do them -so you'll be doing second year courses in...

Ultimate Guide to First Year Maths

Very good thread, this. We should have more like it. Would you consider adding stuff about some of the second year courses that a lot of people do? I guess the problem is that all you engo guys go off and do your own variants of Linear Algebra and Several Variable Calculus.

    These UNSW forums are dying.....

You may think that the UNSW forum is lame, but have you looked at the forums of some of the other unis? Especially the regional ones - I was thinking of doing a masters by correspondence from UNE about 6 months ago, so I was looking at their forum, to see what the uni was like, and I think they...

Need help with choosing uni for teaching!!!

I suppose that you would have to quality as a teacher and then get some experience. What is an educational consultant anyway and why would one want to be one?

    general UNSW chit-chat

Umm... One would hope so. The School of Ed seems to be one of the most disorganized schools on campus, though, so it might not work out that way. Essentially, you have to do all the ed subjects as outlined in that doco, plus whatever is required for a major in the teaching subject, as set out...

    general UNSW chit-chat

They have just changed the structure of the course a bit, which might be why you are having trouble finding info. If you look on p4 of this document, they have some suggested study plans http://education.arts.unsw.edu.au/assets/files/shared/2008/bscbed_4075revised.pdf You'll probably have to...

    Mathematical Induction Q's

You know the proper way to do the 2nd Q don't you? (I mean, stuff what the question actually asks for... I hate mathematical induction - especially when you don't have to use it.) You split up 1/(2n-1)(2n+1) using partial fractions and make a telescoping sum.

    How Hard Is University?

Why do you ask so many inane questions? Who cares what sort of booklet they give you, as long as you can write in it.

I hadn't noticed, actually. Maybe I just don't read that part of the forum.

    Advanced Mathematics @ USYD

When I was doing maths a uni: 1 hour/ night/maths subject. Bit more on the weekend. Bludge at least one evening a week. I would have liked to do more than that, but I can't actually study maths effectively for more than 3 hours a day. (I never did more than three maths subjects in a semester).

    general UNSW chit-chat

As far as the DEs stuff in first year goes, I think that there are only four techniques that you need to know: 1) Solving second order linear ODEs using the characteristic equation. You should know how to deal with all three sub-cases - 2 distinct real roots, repeated roots and complex roots...
