Can someone please tell me how rank effect ur final marks??

I should point out that whilst gordo's method is quite a useful analogy, but the actual processes are different - if you wanted (for some reason) to calculate real moderated assessment marks, this method wouldn't produce the correct results. But it's a nice, simple way to think about it. :)...

How do you tell what mark you got out of 100, when it's reported out of 50?

Provided that the marks have been determined, you can lodge the request whenever you want. :)

how do i compare my school assessment marks?

Keep in mind that your assessment only forms 50% of your final HSC mark. The other 50% comes from the HSC exam. Your performance in each exam could determine whether or not that course counts.

how do i compare my school assessment marks?

Your physics and chemistry marks can only be made comparable if both courses at your school are being taken by roughly the same group of students. Not just if both courses are being taken by the same number of students, but if they're being taken by the same actual students. If this is not...

    About aligned marks

The actual scaling process used is rather complicated - but it is completely different to the aligning process. We can't use the actual scaling process, because hardly anyone knows their raw marks (and not enough data is released to reproduce the scaling transformations anyway). So we try to...

    Illness/Misadventure Appeal

Gather as much evidence of your illness as you can (preferably from reputable sources). If anyone was there when you were sick, get a statement from them. Try to get people who aren't related to you to corroborate your story. Go speak to the doctor again if you weren't satisfied.

    About aligned marks

Yes, that's also true. :) Your aligned marks have no effect on your UAI - but it's possible to approximate a UAI from them. ;)

    Illness during exams

Roughly, yes. Their moderated assessment mark will be used as their exam mark... strictly speaking, even if they're ranked third, it won't actually be equal to the third highest exam mark (test it for yourself here), but they should be similar. (This only...

    Yes and yes. :)

    Explanation of HSC Marks (Moderating)

Your mark for each course consists of an exam mark (50%) and an assessment mark (50%). You'll have five courses counting towards your UAI. Any one of your exams will account for 1/2 * 1/5 = 1/10 of your UAI. You can still do well. :)

Board of Studies reveals raw marks! (2001)

The Board would probably dispute any public interest claims. :)

How do you tell what mark you got out of 100, when it's reported out of 50?

The $30 fee covers the entire FOI application - you can request as much or as little as you want. The fee isn't set by the Board, it's enshrined in the legislation. Covers administrative costs and so on.

Do smart people pull you down?

It could, yes. In that instance I think the whole class would be affected, and not just the bottom half. It's hard to tell, because when the distribution is distorted that much (through a large disturbance of the relativities between students) it sometimes becomes impossible to determine a...

Board of Studies reveals raw marks! (2001)

You could request a breakdown of individual marks - just make sure you explicitly state that in your application. Be as specific as possible. Any ambiguities will cause delays etc.

    Is SAM accurate??

Thaoroxy2001's figures seem accurate. It's impossible to calculate UAIs perfectly - UAC just doesn't release enough data. An error margin of ~0.3 is sufficient for most people though.

    Premier's Award

OK, the prize with the money is the Australian Students Prize (ASP). There were 146 winners from NSW in 2003... similar numbers in previous years. In 2002, the criterion that you had to meet was marks of 93+ in 10 or more units. (Thanks to timmii for the details.)

    Premier's Award

Yes, you would. For the Premier's Award, you only need 10+ units at the top band. English doesn't have to be included. Awards of $2,000 are made to (I think) the top 500 students in Australia, of which around 150 are from NSW. Can't quite remember the details, I'll have to find out.

Do smart people pull you down?

If the relative differences between students for the exam are similar to the relative differences between students for assessment, there should be no such distortions. However, if the difference between the top student and the second student were to substantially increase (relative to the...
