    Centrelink Fares Allowance

If you're living far away from home to study and you are being paid Youth Allowance, there is a little-known Centrelink payment known as Fares Allowance which can help cover the cost of travel during breaks. Fares Allowance pays costs for travel to uni at the beginning of the year, one return...

How hard is it to financially survive away from home for a full-time student?

Yes, it's $4000 lump sum - actually, according to Centrelink it's been indexed up to $4124 this year, so it will be $5221 all up. You will need to be able to cover yourself until the payment comes in which could be a fair way into the semester though (IIRC they can't pay until you've been...

    Two scholarships at once??!

You'll have to check the conditions of the scholarship - often they do prohibit holding two at once in which case you take the larger one.

    Laptops for Uni

Re: Is there any use bringing a laptop to uni? It's great having a medically certified handwriting condition. :P I guess it's a different situation in large lectures, where you can have several hundred students. The barrier already exists just due to the size of the class.

How hard is it to financially survive away from home for a full-time student?

http://www.fahcsia.gov.au/guides_acts/ssg/ssguide-3/ssguide-3.8/ssguide-3.8.15/ssguide-3.8.15.10.html details all the criteria for paying Relocation Scholarships. The main condition is that you have to be paid at the 'dependent living away from home' rate or you are independent for certain...

How hard is it to financially survive away from home for a full-time student?

I've never heard this before. I thought the main criteria was just that you had to move to reasonably do your course. Call Centrelink and check! $1097 per semester this year! Yay! I'd completely forgotten that they were increasing it this year... You'll do just fine - it's not nearly as...

    Laptops for Uni

Re: Is there any use bringing a laptop to uni? Yes, any decent campus will have powerpoints at various spots. In newer lecture theatres you may even find powerpoints underneath the seats. Yes, in many of my classes I'd say half the class was typing. Exception would be maths, if only because...

    Laptops for Uni

Re: Is there any use bringing a laptop to uni? Definitely. You can use it to take notes (if you prefer that to writing, which I do) and you'll need access to online resources to do assignments and things like that - whilst of course you could use uni computers to do that, having your own...

    What to combine law with?

Arts/Law is too typical these days. Engineering/Law, now there's a real epic degree.

How hard is it to financially survive away from home for a full-time student?

If you're getting the relocation scholarship and full rate YA and RA, it's not that difficult. My YA + RA doesn't quite cover rent + food ($300/week), but the $4000 plus $650/semester was enough that I still have about $2000 in the bank now.

UAC Offers 2011 - Downloadable [now with the Early February Round!]

Re: UAC Offers 2011 - Downloadable Commerce/Stats? That's an interesting combination, Actuarial/Stats and Finance/Stats would be a bit more common I'd think. See you in Acton next month!

    The uniqueness "factor"

My two degrees (BA and BSc) are fairly common. My majors (Political Science, International Relations and Computer Science) are also fairly common. What's not common is doing all three of those majors at once, and I'm fairly sure I'm the only second-year at ANU doing both Pol Sci and Comp Sci.

    ANU/Canberra 2011 Rollcall

BA/BAPS isn't that odd a combination, I'm afraid. :P (That said, it's far less common than Arts/Law...) Congrats on Fenner! You'd want to make sure you end up doing two Political Science courses by the end of first year, otherwise you may find your options limited because later-year POLS...

Why is ANU so much easier to get into then sydney uni??

And relevant to ANU students who need to find a justification their Sydney friends might understand, when really they're there because they think it's a better city. :P

Late Round Offers & Alternative Pathways

Re: FAQ: Late Round Offers Yes, because (V) only indicates whether they expect to have vacancies or not based on the data so far. There's a chance courses with a (V) may not end up with vacancies, and courses without it might end up with vacancies. Still, if they don't indicate it, don't...

Why is ANU so much easier to get into then sydney uni??

Because most people think Canberra's a hole. Which it's not, BTW. :P

Enrolled in 2 University UTS & MQ

Yes, generally there are regulations that state you cannot be enrolled at another tertiary institution without formal approval. If you really want to do it, you'll need to talk to the registrar's offices at both unis to obtain approval.
