~95 :p

yeah, I thought as much, it seemed strange it would be so different to Mq

Some of my friends who are expecting ~97 are considering Actrial Studies at UNSW since they can't get into Mq
Neh, at MQ it isn't that high for just ACST ~97 but for double degrees you better be lookin' at mid-98s. Whereas it's only mid-95s at UNSW.

That statistic is an MQ statistic because MQ only want quality graduates. I'd suspect UNSW has a much lower mortality rate, say 20%, because their course is easier (ie. less quality). :D

Well, people would find it borin' if they have no idea what's goin' on. :p

flyin' - I'm pretty sure the difficulty is pretty much the same at MQ as it is at UNSW. I kno Ruse ppl who owned 4U maths are finding their ACST subject quite difficult indeed. That 70% drop out rate at ur uni is there coz its too nazi

ye..and juz to answer freaking out's original questions coz i dun fink any1 has:
actuaries use probability and past figures to predict future trends. mainly for insurance, but also in superannuation and financial consultation. We are like fortune tellers who use maths to predict.
Oh...and we earn 6 figure incomes =p

haha those jokes were pretty good actually, but they can be applied to any siutation, not just actuaries.

95.50 was last year at UNSW as it happens (for Commerce in general).

As for the mortality rates, those are unrealistic. If the scaling were to be left out, then they'd be more like it. (I really don't see the point - people do badly in the tests, then get their exemptions after scaling. You'd think the IAAust would have developed a more efficient model by now (yes it is the Institute, because they monitor standards of exams, etc. to maintain quality))

Of course, that could just be because I haven't had any need to rely on the scaling thus far, and am not likely to atm either.

No, it's there because UNSW doesn't have the heart to fail people - instead they just don't get their exemptions (the problem with leaving statistical specialists in charge - they know how to scale to make sure people who shouldn't get exemptions don't whilst still not failing AND keeping a decent distribution). Otherwise they'd be the same.

Any Ruse ppl in particular, Minai? (speaking as an ex-Ruse student I'm curious - which year, would be a better question)

Well, I also know Ruse people at MQ who owned 4U and are also ownin' ACST subjects. However, I also know people from Selective Schools who got 95+ in 4U and they're gettin' owned... I know people who owned the HSC and they're strugglin'... it's just that the MQ course is of style which makes life very difficult for those who bludge alot (or whole for semesters).

maniacguy, people don't get all their exemptions at UNSW? And they still stay on?

As one person put it, u can stay on and simply pass everything, but at the end of the day, u may as well have not done Actuarial as a major..

Because at MQ, people who don't get exemptions usually try again before droppin' out, or that's the impression I get.

I don't really know of anyone droppin' out... but I was makin' mental bets on a few people... but they managed to scrap through. But talkin' with friends I don't hang around much... they've been a few (or they just don't seem to at Uni anymore). It'll be more indicative next year when I (Edit: If I :p) walk into STAT272 and ACST200. :D

actuaries may go on to be succefull with good income, only if theyre doing the course because its their interest, not cause of the oppurtunitites, which is also competitive. in the end they'll be boring buisness managers
