carbon tax is retarded. if labour really cared about the environment they'd stop giving 200 million a year to holden and ford.
* Labor. While i'm not a fan of all the protection the Australian car industry has I don't think opposing it on environmental concerns makes much sense. If (when) the Australian car industry dies the people currently driving falcodores aren't going to start driving turbo diesel golfs and I very much doubt the European car manafacturers (many of which are subsidised in their home markets, just saying) will suddenly stop over charging.

I really find this a shame because I am actually prepared to vote for a good local candidate regardless of party.

Business that don't want to pay the tax won't pollute as much, and furthermore , this will compensate for the negative externalities produced by factories with high pollution. FYI, it's called a pigovian tax or corrective tax. Want me to draw the graph ?
I'm not talking about the effects of the carbon tax, im talking about the hypocrisy of the labor government trying to be pro-environment yet give money to the industry that creates the biggest polluters in the world. read the post in context kthnx.

Given that subsidies are something that can be used by the government to promote the production of things that generate positive externalities, do you think subsidising car manufacturers who produce more enviro-friendly cars would be a good move?

Although I am not a fan of either of the major parties at the moment, it's surprising to see so many on BOS voting for libs with all the planned cuts to the student sector. I guess you must all be rich, or something.

hybrid cars actually cause more pollution. nickel processing is a dirty dirty business. shipping the parts from one end of the earth to another isnt really eco friendly anyway. Australia shouldn't be a car producing country, we don't have that competitive advantage at all.

hybrid cars don't cause more pollution. this myth about the environmental impact of the nickel-metal hyride batteries in hybrid cars (particularly, the toyota prius) derives from the erroneous assumption that such batteries wouldn't last longer than 160,000km, proven wrong on the evidence of the hundreds of priuses used as taxis that haven't required battery replacements until 250,000km+. as lithium-ion battery technology improves, nickel-hydride batteries won't even be an issue.

the production pollution of hybrid cars is higher, but is fully compensated for by the lower emissions in use. furthermore, due to the use of rare earth metals, hybrid cars far more recyclable components than other cars.

subsidising the australian auto manufacturing industry while it slowly dies involves a whole lot of pork, but is the only responsible policy. the other option is long term unemployment.

Kevin Rudd in 2008-2010 gave generous tax cuts to the mega rich (millionaires and billionaires) in Australia (more tax cuts than John Howard could ever dream). Now that Kevin Rudd is back expect the rich to get richer. The Coalition will copy Labor's tax reforms. Labor wants to promote self reliance, hard work and entrepreneurship. Kevin Rudd is right of centre as manifested by his design of the Papua New Guinea/ Nauru Resettlement Solution for Asylum seekers. Kevin Rudd is more right wing than John Howard. Kevin Rudd is also terminating the carbon tax.

But none of the fuel efficient vehicles you are talking about have the size or performance figures of a falcodore at close to the price - more than any subsidies or taxes can account for in most cases. That's before maintenance costs are even considered. The press are comparing the ~90k HSV GTS to a 250k Benz.

I'm not an Aussie car fan boy but you have to give credit where credit is due. Another thing to consider is the fact that most Euro cars (even base models) require premium petrol while Australian built cars are often tuned to run on lower octane fuels which causes a decrease in fuel efficiency and performance.

Admittedly both the ford and holden v8's are American, the Holden v6 a joint effort and only the ford staight 6 is entirely Australian. Most cars are global efforts nowadays anyway.

or go buy a jap car that does way better on fuel performance.

this is of course in theory and provided people are rational thinkers, they're not in real life. Who knows where the money collected from the tax went and how much was collected. Draw a graph all you want but to say that it can be summed up in one graph is ridiculous. Not to mention that Carbon emissions would almost be perfectly inelastic, therefore almost stopping no emissions

So when Kevin cuts tax for the rich it's good, but when tony does it it's bad?
