I reckon an hour kip at midday would be better. Special dark sleeping rooms, with little pods and the like. Then just keep them back an hour more.
That's better for parents, and probably more effective
A 90 minute nap in the middle of the day is extremely good for learning and memory retention, so I support that idea.

Doctor Karl endorses this initiative.

Teenagers are programmed to sleep later than children/adults.

There should be no uni classes scheduled before 11am also.

hell yes.

also, I'd support the idea of starting school later. It wouldn't be that hard to implement, kids are perfectly capable of making it to and from school in one piece on their own so parents needn't worry about it. And if it's going to improve the quality of learning in students, why not? Obviously sleep is not the only factor that influences learning, and it doesn't mean that all kids are going to get more sleep, but there's no harm in at least trying.

Even if school started at 10:00am, students will still get sleepy at around 12:00 or 1:30.

I often find my head snaps back violently at the sudden realisation I've drifted off once again. Must learn to wake more subtly.

Yeah, until you wake up and realise someone has drawn penises all over your face.

Haha yess!!

One time my head snapped back onto the window of the train. The guy next to me asked if I was ok.

I've been getting 8 hours sleep for uni and not once have I fallen asleep in a lecture so far. Woo.

They should build such facilities on uni campuses and in the city, wherever people study or work.

I think they should be littered around. Like public toilets. Individual like.
I question the morality of having hives of humans sleeping together.

Well if it really bothered you you'd be the type of person who'd question the morality of sleeping in past 8 :D

I think school should start and finish earlier for high school students.

It's a great way to de-conjest Sydney's roads and transport system and means that schooling doesn't (in effect) take up the whole day.

Not to mention the fact that in summer, students will avoid much of the afternoon heat that they experience at school if it finishes earlier.

I know that as a uni student, I hate being at uni anytime after 2pm. My brain just stops functioning.

i like your idea, but how would you compensate(to the eyes of the general public, at least) for the hours lost?

Keep the hours the same. 6 hour days... just statr those 6 hour days earlier.... even if fractionally...

7am - 1pm.

Yes this sounds daunting at the moment... but society would adapt.

heres my thing...i already wake up in the dark at the start/end of daylight savings. and im really close to the most eastern point of australia.

i cannot adapt to that. i can barely adapt to daylight savings.
if this happens to me at school, i will grr at you.
if it happens once i am out of school, i will laugh at the misfortune of others.

as it stands, i should be in brisbane next year. no daylight savings bitches.

I'm not sure why the congestion of Sydney's transport system is coming up as an issue here. It's about conditions that assist effective learning. If kids learnt best in a timetable-system that meant Sydney's roads were constantly in gridlock I'd still be supportive of it.

I never said anything about removing the timetable system...studies show that most children learn more effectively in the early morning anyway.
