1)Explain how government policies towards Aboriginal people have impacted on their rights and freedoms over time.
Since 1788, the Aboriginal race has widely been recognised as the primitive civilisation in contrast to the superiority of the Europeans. Their existence was considered nothing more than flora and fauna even though they were the original occupants of this land. This concept was officially recognised as ‘terra nullius’, land owned by no one.

The Australian government has always been in the fray when it came to the Aboriginal people. Their first two policies of Paternalism and Protectionism were clear indications of the attitude they had towards Aborigines. Paternalism was the government’s “obligation” to act on behalf of the Aboriginal people because they were helpless to do so. This was also referred to as a father-like initiative, to assist young Aboriginal children (now the Stolen Generation) to have a better chance at life. Protectionism put simply, was the segregation of Aboriginal people to protect them from diseases brought along by the Europeans and to protect them from each other. The fact that the Indigenous race has survived for thousands of years is a clear indication they did not require this help. One must ponder, is taking away someone else’s children, separating them from their parents forever and throwing them into schools to be “educated properly”, a father-like act?

Assimilation was the next policy in line that painted the way for the degradation of Aboriginal culture and heritage. In 1961, it was officially enforced on the basis that it would be a positive effect on the Aboriginal people allowing them to coincide with the white society. The government indicated that they would attain equal rights, responsibilities, customs and other facets of life that present white Australians had. It failed to indicate the true goal of the government was to eradicate Aboriginal culture altogether. Half-caste children (half aboriginal, half white) were continued to be taken away from their parents against their will. Many Aborigines did seek a better lifestyle due to the past mistreatment however they were not accepted by the white Australians. The government did not suggest that they were forced to be accepted just that they could enter their society if they were willing to surrender their culture. Aboriginal exclusion was apparent in several cases. They were denied access to shops, entertainment and public places and were even relocated to special residential areas that were only accommodated by other Aborigines. The once again lived on the fringe of society.

Just something I written up last year for an assignment. Hope its helpful! :D

Thats what our history teachers did too.
Some students had done the past multiple choice questions as part as their study and then turns out the exact same questions were in the exam. Needless to say they got 20/20 for the multiple choice section.

i reckon that's pretty unfair. like the past papers are there to be practiced, and i'm sure hte history teachers would hav KNOWN that at least SOMEONE would look at them and do them as a practice to get a feel of the types of questions that could be asked..

this indicates a huge amount of laziness on the part of the history faculty - and highlights their ignorance towards fairness in the exams, as well as the actual school certificate..

my school only scabbed the extended responses from BOS.. i think.. lol who knows what ELSE they scabbed.. maybe even other questions for the short answers which I just havent noticed..

Yea, it is. I was really pissed off when I found out. Lazy teachers, couldn't be bothered setting us a proper exam paper :mad1: .

Our whole exam was taken from BoS. The multiple choice, short answer and extended response.

meh. I got over it.

Choose any migrant group. It could be italian, greek, asian etc.

Include info on:
- How and where they lived.
- The changing policies (ie. assimilation policy (melting pot) and multiculturalism)
- How these policies affected them.
etc.

hmm 18/20 is pretty good - but at least you know you achieved it honestly, and i definitely think maintaining integrity is FAR more important than the school certificate, lol.

hmm for the migrant groups - you basically need to outline everything dalie sed. just make sure you discuss experiences.

yea, thats exactly what my friends and I said. But secretly, I think we were just trying to make ourselves feel better  .

And yea...make sure you include atleast one case study, even if it is brief.

then why did you say "speak for yourself"? i do think if you were referring to people in general and not me specifically then you should have worded your reply VERY differently.. it's made to sound like I used an ipod and that I shouldnt be making comments about maintaining integrity.

ohh thank you !

sighs i was really frustrated lol because i thought I DIDNT CHEAT and now there's this stupid rumour i used an ipod..

i wrote 5 pages, that's why. and everyone in my class was like.. WOAH! and i thouhgt they were probly starting a rumour, which got to your ears, hence your mentioning of the use of ipods a few posts ago.

alright ! ! thank god that's solved !

and yeah i can imagine people did use ipods. people up the back of my class i'm pretty sure i saw iwth their bags up on their desks, which means they probably had some preprepared essay on the table concealed so that they could copy it without the teacher noticing and giving them zero, or maybe they had an ipod or something..

yeah, well i would never cheat just for some marks - lol for our half yearly commerce exam , i found out what the extended response was on trade unions coz i heard people talking about it, so i went and told davis and asked her to change it because i didnt feel right knowing it before hand and gaining an advantage. and then she did change it :p

so yeah. i would be the last person to cheat, which is why i was quite offended or .. i suppose kinda taken aback.. when you mentioned it.

but yeah thanks for clearing that up! :uhhuh:
