Carrot, I hope you're gonna be using LaTeX for your notes! (I wrote my Ext2 notes in LaTeX back then, so you better be as well )

One very important point I would like to highlight is that your notes (and especially your examples) should be accessible by below to average students. There is no point in going into deeply rigorous explanations (which may extend beyond the syllabus) if the student is at pains to understand the basics. I personally would avoid going straight into HSC style questions as examples when learning topics for the first time and only provide them when the student has sufficient confidence to handle the topic area.

I never used notes for maths, but if I did, I suppose theorem proofs mainly. Don't really care about color. A few worked examples for each theorem.

Okay my bad. I should've said "the default LaTeX font" (yes it is possible to change it to Times or some variation of Times, but not Times New Roman since it is patented or something...)

By the way, the "exam" package is quite nice once you have a template established. It can also add up the total points to make sure it adds to 100 and some other nice things as well.

I think there should be a short description of the topic and then a brief summary discussing formulae etc.

One or two worked examples that are common in exams would also be invaluable.

I find them interesting, and others might stop their inane "omg we're never going to use this in life - no one will ever use this in life".

Thinking about it, I think I like things with not much reading but has every step clearly shown... but that's probably because I hate reading...

Also highlighting or putting in a different coloured font the parts that may be beyond the syllabus. Say a proof does not need to be known, putting it in red or something just makes it easier for later study when you want to see what you need to know.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of understanding proofs and basic underlying principals in both understanding and also remembering mathematical concepts. In high school I merely rote-learned as we were never provided with underlying proofs and what not due to time constraints. It was not fun. Now, I watch Khan academy maths vids and I enjoy maths (i know right). If only I had such knowledge when I was in high school...

I don't really take notes in class at all. Well my teacher doesn't really, sometimes its just a brief one line theorem statement, or something. Then following that is just examples of questions under that topic that we do in class. Then from there its just practise, and this has helped me very well for maths as well, I don't see the benefit of actually having proper notes for maths.
