i got a mad list to help you with your speech.

tell them this:

eat a healthy food , not take away !
bring several pencil, cause sharping them waste precious exam time.
do multiple choice first, it's a good warm up and you'll may find that some answers may link to further questions.
aim high and nag for incorrect marking.
and buy one of those pens that will make u the fastest writer in the exam room-im talking a wet ballpoint!

and yeh, you've probably already done your speech, but if anyone else is browsing for tips, here's my $0.02:

during the year:
- don't become completely hsc-focused -- i.e. don't quit your job, keep doing sports, and still go out with freinds. you need some relaxing time. (but this should cut down when you get close to the exams)
- ask your teachers stuff(especially if you don't have tutors), it's their job to help you.
- *try* to work in free periods (i did, until we got quake running over the school networks :p... probably docked a few points off my uai :))

leading up to exams:
- quick revision with your mates outside the exam rooms can help; but don't rely on it.
- get a good night's sleep, and eat a decent breakfast (or lunch, if it's an afternoon exam)

in the exams:
- don't take lollies or gum into an exam; it'll only distract you.
- *most* of the time, the times reccomended for each section on the front of the paper are pretty good. (but they always seem to allocate too much for multiple choice sections... )
- if you find you have to go to the toilet, go. (unless there's only 10 minutes left or you're seriously behind schedule)

after:
- don't dwell on it. it doesn't matter wether the answer to question 3 was 6 or 7, it's done and you're not changing it.

Some people say that the best way to not get nervous about a speech is to picture your audience naked. What the hell? I think that would make you nervous as hell especially when your eyes drift toward your 70 yr old principle.Don't go there girlfriend

these are some of my tips:

* try and do 10 or 11 units
* If you know your subject doesn't scale that well, study bloody hard in it.
* Don't concentrate too hard on Ext 2 or Ext 1 maths unless you need it for next year in uni. I think the contribution to the uai of high level maths is disproportionate to the increase in UAI gained if the study had been placed in more mundane subjects (just my opinion). i.e. You can do 10 hrs of 4u study and 10hrs of Legal studies and realise that your legal mark will increase by 2-3 marks. If you want high 99s however, study like a freak in EVERY subject.
*Make sure you cram like nothing else in the last 2 months. I.e. 10 hrs a day at least and during the exams too.
* Use BoS and the subject forums here. The other forums may not be as useful. Check out the Math Ext 2 forum at the mo....any 4u student would benefit from what's going on in there.
* Chew gum in the exam, it oxygenates the brain.

* Never study for so many hours a day just because you have been told that it is expected. You know what is required to learn (in some cases) and revise the subject to the level that you want, so don't feel pressured to have to do say 8 hours a day when you may only need 3, if that.

* You should know what is best, so keep that in mind when planning your life/study timetable before and during the HSC.

I dont know if gum is such a good idea 'cause chewing gum makes you thirsty, not to mention hungry, so you drink lots of water which then leads to you needing to go to the loo 50 times :p Or like me, it might fall out of your mouth when youre thinking really hard and forgeting to chew, and get stuck to your page :p

I agree with the gum chewing, espcially during study.

I remember reading a study once where it was stated that chewing gum increases memory retention by 30%.

Hey! I'm not complaining, and it's like praying, what you go to lose?

- even if people are stingy leading up to trials, after they should be more than happy to help since they want everyone to go well in the HSC. Ask for help, don't be afraid. I found that sharing notes for my english texts was great as you could see some different perspectives, and also how people approach arguments differently.

- the best bit of notemaking? Remembering the stuff as you mentally summarise and writing it down. It's pointless to flog someone else's notes... unless it's 2 days before, and your notes aren't done, and you're not goign to get them done in time. (ie. me for physics!)

- If you're a last minute crammer like me, at least try and start 2 days before. I remember doing 3u at about 4 am, and chem at about 8 pm. (in the morning, and the night before).

- Use mind maps. Hey at least there's something fun in english, you get to draw and colour in.

- oh don't get too worked up about it all. Stress attacks, panic attacks don't help. Rationalise.

- i wouldn't really bother with the homework that teachers set you, unless you think it'll help. Don't bother doing it just for the SAKE of doing it. Concentrate on learnign the syllabus.

- the syllabus is you god. Worship it. Pray to it. Sacrifice goats as offerings.

I read that report too..the scientists were adamant that it improved memory and exam performance. 30% might be a bit far fetched but even a 5% increase in performance would be worth it!

note to skandi: Wrigleys and Hubba Bubba are paying us at their respective head offices in Syd. :p

and a VERY IMPORTANT point ....... don't listen to anyone before the test who mentions the phrase from the simpsons "Lisa needs braces....Dental Plan!....Lisa needs braces...Dental plan!!" .....

it seriously fucks up your thinking for the first 10 minutes....

When you get into the exam room get rid of bits & pices on the floor in front of you, I had an elastic band in front of me and it drove me nuts cause I kept staring at it (for some unknown reason) and I couldnt work properly:mad1:
