Subjects I currently do:
English Advanced (currently around average)
Legal Studies (currently 1/43)
Japanese (2/13)
Japanese Extension (unknown)
Maths Extension 1 (35/80)
Maths Extension 2 (below average)

With a total of 11 units.
My school rank is in top 20s.
And I just had an examination at the end of last term.
My 3U score was above average, so is my 2U one. But 4U one bellow average.
However, if I drop down to 3U, I'll have to compete with people in 2U to get the ranks, but cannot get top 10.
And if I keep 4U, I compete with less people and it ranks me higher.
Please help.
I want to get an ATAR of at least 97.

Thank you!

If you think you can score 60% raw mark in the final HSC 4unit exam, you are most likely to achieve bandE4, and it scales really good compare to 2unit.

Then you should keep it.

Stay with 4U. Your ranks have the potential to change significantly by the end of the year anyway. Just go hard really.

But if you feel like you really can't cope, there's no point in just ending up with a bad mark. If you think you can stick it out though, do 4U :)

my thoughts:

In the end, in my experience.. 4unit was the subject that prevented me from attaining a 99+ atar. But in saying that, I was probably the most lazy 4u student.. and in the end only attained about 50-55/120 in the actual HSC exam - A FAIL.. yet that still equated to a HSC mark of 80 - and that HSC mark of 80 in 4unit will equate to around a mark of 92 in 2unit maths.
So what I'm basically getting at is.. if you think you can get a 95+ in 2unit easily.. then go for 2unit. However, if you think you can pass a 4unit exam, e.g. 60/120 or even 75/120 then definitely do 4u.. it aligns like crazy and scales like crazy, if your aiming for 97+ it will definitely help you out.

Also, take into account that 4U maths accounts for 4 units whereas 2U accounts for 2 units. So given that you go well in 4U maths, those 4U will help your atar greatly since 4U scales like crazy.
