in answer to the original question, no.

why u ask? cause i am entitled to an opinion.

ok now this part is biased so take this as opinion not agenda: IMO we should get rid of all religous holidays and only have days off to celebrate stuff worthy of rememberance such as ANZAC day, Australia day, labour day, so on and so forth and also queen's birthday (just because i like the concept of a three day weekend) :D

*end rant

that is the only defence i can see comming from you. BTW, the people who came in chains made the country you now call home ... think about that instead of complaining or FLY back where you came from

So wipe your eyes, blow ur nose, and bring up some arguments that have NOT been repeated over nine thousand times already :)

I propose a new system

Everybody nominates a given number of "public holiday" days anywhere in the year. You can put religious holidays, you can put your birthday, new year etc.

Your work can either give you the day off OR pay you at public holiday rates.

Everybody wins.

Please, please, PLEASE die now.
"You people? Your kind?"
They're the words of a fucking discriminatory generalising narrow-minded bigot like yourself. Stop trying to pull off an act of insightfulness, you're a doltish idiot.
i agree with you totally; but we also have to be realistic. my parents and the whole coptic orthodox community that now live in australia, migrated to australia because they were literally being persecuted by muslims back in egypt because of our religion. i am aussie born and consider this country my home, yet muslims wants their holidays to be considered. This disgust me in two ways; a) Australia is a catholic nation, politicians and our prime minister read the Lords prayer before they commence their proceedings
b) many migrate to get away from the persecution inflicted by muslims, now they want their holiday, Ramadan they call it to be considered
if you haven't realized yet jee, correct me if i am wrong, but the only terrorists i can think of are muslims and if we allow their holidays to be recognised, we are allowing a pathway for them to terrorise Australia and i'm not going to let that happen. /end rant.

australia has so many more public holidays than anywhere else.

no i don't think other religious holidays should become public holidays, because, as stated, you would have to have a public holiday for every religion. i also don't believe that muslim, hindu, buddhist, whatever, should have the day off on christian holidays if they demand having another day off to acknowledge their religious traditions. you can't have it both ways. just get used to the fact that the majority of the nation is an english speaking, christian society, and therefore our public holidays reflect that.

plus, who really think christmas and easter aren't commercialised and just about presents and chocolate anyway.

it's ingrained into society due to the history of australia, so get over it.

A LEADING Muslim spokesman has criticised new NSW laws that enshrine the rights of staff to refuse to work on Christian-orientated public holidays.

The State Government is banning most shops from opening on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Easter Sunday and Good Friday unless their owners can prove compelling demand from the local community. Sydney-based Muslim community spokesman Keysar Trad said workers of all faiths were entitled to a break and called for the two main Muslim public holidays to be recognised as well. "It does give the impression that we are a solely Christian nation and it raises the issue of other religions too, whether you are Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim," he said.

"I know Muslim workers face problems asking for their public holidays off work at the moment. "There are only two Muslim public holidays, so it is not a lot to ask."

What are your thoughts on this? Should it or should it not? If we should, should we also recognise other religious holidays as well?

I wonder if us atheists have any official holiday? :blah:
Yep, why not? Seeing it's the second largest religion worldwide, I think the holidays should be recognised. But regardless, no matter how much NGOz or non-legal measures try to alter or introduce changes to laws, they ain't gonna succeed until the Australian Legal System itself passes laws in response to the raising demands for reform. So just to let you know, our views on this issue are not likely to be considered by the Australian Legal System. And if they however are one day, I don't think our views will be formally enacted.

I invite danger. :D

Well not all Islamic countries are like that. You can't judge the whole religion based on one country's regulations.
End of the day once it comes to the Islamic religion... It's GET THE FUCK OUTTA OUR WAY WE'RE MORE IMPORTANT

So your saying that Muslims shouldn't have public holidays in Australia because of the way Muslims treat Christians in Lebanon.
